For someone who knows little of the MG42 what should a prospective buyer look for when buying a MG42 for the occasional shooting at the range? How many MG42's are in the registry if known? Are there any good books on the MG42 out there that cover the details? Are replacement parts easy to come by? Were there any manufactured in the USA before 1986? Thank you!

Mg34-Mg42 - German Universal Machineguns - Folke Myrvang / Collector Grade Publications.

Replacement parts are fairly easy to come by.

Have owned one in the past, between the 34 and 42 much prefer the 34.

Go over to the MG-34/42 site, run by Salt6.....> There the MG-42 is discussed from A to Z, a hundred times.

As for a Class III Gunsmith who knows and understands the MG42, I would refer you to Bob Naess, Black River Militaria. His web sites is:

First question I would have is the MG all matching? Second is has it ever been rebuilt? The barrel return springs need to be replaced, on a weapons that is at least 65 years old these spring are extremely fatigued. Shooting with these 65 year old spring can damage the front of the roller locking ramps, trunnion and the front rails.

- How many MG42's are in the registry if known? Answer, I don't know.

- Are there any good books on the MG42 out there that cover the details? Answer, see above.

- Are replacement parts easy to come by? Answer, yes. Post-WW-II parts from the former Yugoslavia exist as well as from Germany. The Yugo version was the MG-53, and the German continue to manufacture the MG42 today as the MG3. It has been exported world wide.

- Were there any manufactured in the USA before 1986? Answer, no. An attempt was made to reverse engineer the MG42 by the US Army late in WW-II. The few examples were a failure, the never took into account the differences between the 8mm and .30-06 cartridges.
