I've got that MAD magazine issue, and the John Toland book... :)

Rob

The Toland book is a good read, this particular one shown is autographed inside by Hostage from the Racine robbery, Dillinger's sister, Dillinger family members, JD's girlfriend's sister, people that knew him, and some others-

IMHO, the William J. Helmer book and the Joe Pinkston book are the best out there, lots of Tommy gun stuff and good old fashioned bank robbery stories.

Belive it or not, Sandy, I haven't read it yet....I picked it up at a vintage book shop, and grabbed it because it said "Dillinger".

Because I have read Toland's biography of Adolf Hitler (he's a thorough biographer, I might add), I figured he would do the story of JD and his times justice, and I couldn't go wrong by buying it.. :)

John & his wife did a lot of research on the book, interviewed a lot of people. Some standard 1960ish historical mistakes but nothing that will change history. Joe Pinkston's book, "Dillinger a Short & Violent Life" is probably the best direct history book on Dillinger, Helmer's is a more updated version and better written. You will have to Ebay both I believe. Joe's book, 1963 as I remember, Bill's 90s. Of course Bill's Thompson book is excellent too.

Bonnie & Clyde, Jim Knight's book. ( Jim is due here this Spring for a visit - ) We did a History Channel thing together on Dillinger & Bonnie & Clyde's cars . He owns a 18 BAR as I do, BUT I've got a Thompson !

Three books that I have enjoyed lately, were "Tommy Gun" by Bill Yenne, a very good read that covers our favorite firearm and the history around it. Also, the Prohibition Wars weren't just in the cities. Check out "A Knight of Another Sort" by Gary DeNeal and "Bloody Williamson" by Paul Angle. These follow the war fought in Southern Illinois where armored cars, bombs and even bombs from airplanes were used. Williamson County was so notorious that the NY Times coined the phrase "Bloody Williamson" to describe it.
