New OOW 1918A3

Recommended Posts

Well due to a lack of tnw 1919a4's for sale to replace the one i sold, I settled on this bar I found.

Some day would like to find another 1919, but meantime this fills that void.

I agree they are nice. When I'm fresh mine can do 1 inch at 100yds with M2 spec ball. Had mine out this last Sat. and after over a bandolier through a couple of Garands and a couple of mags through the BAR I could still do easy 1-1/2 inch groups.

The windage is rough ( about 4-inch clicks , gotta use a punch and hammer for finer ) as is the elevation ( does your slide go down to 100 yds are just to 300 yds ? I like my 100 yd'er ) . File down the sight for perfection . But , hey , it wasn't designed as a target rifle , it just wants to be one.

The lack of a bolt hold open was a BATF requirement , but I would like to have one for safety . Use a popcicle stick with a dowel or wooden thread spool as a handle ( otherwise others will see it as trash and you'll have to dumpsterdive for it ).

I agree, its very well made, and don't regret buying it at all. Is a very accurate gun at 100 yards, and rear sight can drop one click below 100 yards for 50 yards. Only a pita to strip, and can't be done that I've seen that don't scratch finish on receiver.

It can by using a thin plastic card on the reciever for the pin lock to ride on . Did that for a while , but the marks are a sign of use and do belong on a real BAR in military service , so I let them develop over time.

Yeah your right, saw a few real ones recently, and decided to let the marks ride.... Now to get it to work with blanks...

I see you are planning to use this for reenactment. Note that the carrying handle, the 2-piece bipod yoke, and the long (Type 3 or Type 4) gas regulator are all post-WWII features. http://90thidpg.us/Equipment/Articles/BARGas/

For blanks, you'll need the special blank magazine with the built-in spacer, some type of bore restrictor (a fender washer placed between the muzzle and the flash hider should work) and, probably, a shorter recoil spring. You'll have to experiment with these as well as with the gas regulator setting.

Yeah ommited the carry handle, and bipod. Grandfather was a bar man in WWII (thus my impression), and told me he never saw a carry handle on one till late 44 early 45, and first thing he did when got to France was lighten his load by "loosing" his bipod during cleaning. Regulator is one if those things, that unless your a bar expert would never notice.

I ordered a bfa from Atlanticwall, and said his blacktip mg short blanks will work in regular mags with no, to minor tweaking. So ordered 100 blanks to test this weekend.

I have several Swanson blank adapted mags I bought before I decided not to be a 60 yr old man lugging a BAR through the woods......I do not know what they are worth or how many I have...(I think I have a full belt). I'm checking now for a per mag price. If you want to buy them please contact me by PM and I'll let you know what I find out.

Pm sent.

Got my bfa and blanks from Atlantic wall. Bit disappointed that most I tried before giving up, were missized and wouldn't chamber properly, jamming before bolt fully closed, requiring boot to oprod to eject it. Fed live rounds and chanted properly, so know wasn't gun.

Least ones that were sized right fed, fired, and cycled properly so I know the gun will work in field.
