OCM
A guy contacted me last week about toy Thompsons in relation to the gangsters. All I knew ( not a toy collector ) was Melvin Purvis had some stuff out and Rick Mattix I believe had a G-Man Thompson toy. I had some old minature Thompsons in my collection and two Japanese Thompsons I bought new in 1969 for 99 each, still have one for car displays. As a kid my brother & I had a cast iron Thompson that went click, click when you pulled the trigger. It was always around left in a bush or something. The bad guy always got the Thompson in our cops & robbers-Just in general, anyone into these toy, G-Men type Thompsons ?I said I'd ask. Thanks, OCM
emmagee1917
Closest I come is a Matel M1 syle Thompson that was plastic for the most part and would make a tat-tat sound when the handle was cocked and the trigger pulled . I believe it also took caps , but it was rare we had any ( wonder why ) . It disappeared when I went off to collage as well as the rest of my toy arsonal ( M1 garand , M1 carbine , M1911 ( shot plastic bullets from cases ) , Bazooka , 60MM mortar ( these last two shot blue bombs from an internal cocked spring ) , M1919A4 ( battery powered belt fed with a flaming muzzle , rat-tat sound , and an endless looped belt that fed into it ) , '03 Springfield ( single shot cap gun ) , a few revolvers ( repeating cap guns ) .By golly , I do recall a '28 style with a permanant drum on it. It made sounds through a speaker in the drum. The drum had slots in it to let the sound out. Don't recall if it took batteries or not , though.I miss them sometimes , but I have the real thing in these now , and more. Big boys , real toys .Chris

rjb1
Mattel had at least two types of Thompsons made in the fifties. Both were 1928 types (mostly). The most accurate-looking one had a crank on the side that would let you shoot caps very quickly. The caps loaded into the lower part of the twenty-round stick through a small door. That one I think was called the "Thunderburst", and my brother had one of those. It looked VERY much like a military-issue 1928A1. The one that had the retractable "bolt" and made a gun-noise from the drum was the "Thunderburp" (from "burp-gun".). That one was mostly 1928-looking, but did have the bolt handle on the side instead of the topThey also made a grease-gun with the cap-firing mechanism of the Thunderburst Thompson. One probably-intentional bit of reality was that the cap-firing crank was at the proper location of the cocking handle of the real M3. My next door neighbor had one of those. In the pre-politically-correct days our neighborhood was the Arsenal of Democracy for toy guns. I have always felt that the fifties-era guns and toy soldiers were so accurate because the toy designers and toy makers were likely WWII veterans who knew exactly what those things were supposed to look like. I still have my favorite toy .45 auto from those days and I guarantee that it is so real looking that you could hold up any liquor store in town with that thing. emmagee1917
Yea , mine was a side cocker . It came in a Sgt. Sanders Combat kit with a plastic belt , canteen , carrier , and a couple of pineapple cap grenades . I bought my first Thompson . a WH M1A1 , because of that toy. I thought that was what Sgt. Sander's carried because I remembered the side cocker. Year or two later I added a WH '28 just because. Several years later I bought the "Combat" series , and lo and behold , he's carrying a '28.Of course , now that I think about it , most of my "real" gunsI have now , I had as toys in my youth. Mid-life crisis ?Chris
Mk VII
In England Airfix did a plastic Tommy, that fired gray polythene bullets http://www.network54.com/Forum/47211/thread/1290029618/Old+Guy+memories+update Careful examination will show that the molding was 'beefed up' somewhat in the magazine well area otherwise it would have been too weak. emmagee1917
I had the Mattel Tommy Burst and the Gung-ho set , so I may be mistaken on where the acc. came from . I also had the Jonny Reb , the Jonny Seven , the Radio Rifle and the Snap-shot as well . I took care of my toys , and had amassed quite a pile . Didn't figure they'd be gone when I returned from college.Chris

Bridgeport28A1
My dear mother did not throw out my toys. I had another Mattel Tommyburst that had a scope on it. The "demilled" Tommyburst was a retirement gift from a co-worker. http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g374/TW56/Mattel%20Tommyburst/IMG_6796.jpghttp://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g374/TW56/Mattel%20Tommyburst/IMG_6797.jpghttp://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g374/TW56/Mattel%20Tommyburst/IMG_6799.jpghttp://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g374/TW56/Mattel%20Tommyburst/IMG_6798.jpg Ross
