Bonnie Parker's .38 Special Made Legal By ATF Ahead Of Auction

Recommended Posts

In my humble opinion, insane.

Marie Barrow told me straight up, Bonnie couldn't even walk anymore from the burn she suffered ( to the bone ) not long before-

Clyde would pretty much have to carry her , in the end.

They were killed at about 9:30 am in the morning, after going into Gibsland, La to get sandwiches for breakfast. Mostly lived in the car.

Car had mohair, no AC, hot and humid & buggy, so she would of had get up and tape a gun to her inner thigh-

Good story for the old TRUE & STAG magazines.

I personally don't believe it. Wasn't there anyway.

OCM,

The first thought that came to mind is that the Colt seemed in really nice condition, unaffected by crotch sweat. Maybe it was one of those rare stainless steel Colts.

What a crock with this serial number business. Serial numbers were not even required until the infamous GCA of 1968. I have owned numerous, usually inexpensive guns, made prior to 1968 and they have never had serial numbers. I am certain the BATF have noted these all the time at gun shows they are policing and does nothing about them. Another piece of history altered due to govermental stupidity!

My wife stopped watching Fox News long enough to inform me that the B&C guns sold for $500,000. It came across the crawler. I have not confirmed this.

I'll leave that to Roscoe or OCM to do >

I looked at some pre-war Colt and S&W double-action revolvers at a gun show in Louisiana this past weekend. All those old guns had serial numbers. While it's true that some guns made prior to '68 were not numbered, such as the Winchester .22 rifle I recently handled, I think both Colt and S&W serialized all their 20th century manufactured center-fire revolvers. According to reports, the Bonnie Parker Colt had the number ground off, making the gun illegal for anyone to own. Just ask the former Leesville, LA police chief. He got popped by the Feds for having 2 such weapons in his possession, among other charges. What a maroon! But still, I'm surprised that BATF just didn't confiscate and destroy the Bonnie piece.

Old Colts in particular are well-documented as to serial numbers. If you know the serial number on any Colt model even back into the 1800's you can find out what year it was made. I tend to think that this one had its serial number removed so no one could document that it was made after Bonnie and Clyde were dead.

If you think about it, if you were in the business of robbing and killing people, why would you care what the serial number was on your gun? If the cops find it on you, are they going to add something to the penalty your're facing because of having it - electrocution, hanging, or in the case of B&C, gunning you down?

This stuff is getting crazy. I knew Bob Davis the prior owner, that had these guns, he passed away a number of years ago. Glad I sold my collection and moved on to other things. I just cringe when I see the " provenance " on this stuff. Just a little research and a few friendly questions could save a lot of mispent dollars.

Just like collecting Thompsons.

I'll go watch the video- Thanks Roscoe

  • 3 months later...

Just searching other spots on the boards, Sorry for the late entry,

The serial number was added by a friend of mine in the business here in NH.

I inspected it, and the finish was nice..but the serial number had obviously been removed. He did not take it apart to see if there were other numbers, he knew it was going to bring big money and did not want to mess with it.

An on another note, I have an old Marlin 22 rifle I got at a yard sale years ago that clearly never had a serial number.

A lot of old .22's don't have serial numbers. I have a Remington 510 Targetmaster from the 1940's that doesn't have one. I don't recall the exact regulations regarding serial numbers 50+ years ago, but it seems maybe the GCA of '68 was the point when all firearms had to be serialed.
