ineverlistentoFM
I was driving along Route 33 in Virginia toward Richmond about 3-4 years ago and there was this very small thrift shop of sorts that was just starting up or going out of business or both. I bought a nintendo 64 from the guy and he had this paper hanging on the wall that he directed my attention toward; I asked him how much i was and he said $5. glad to share it with you all. too bad it's not the edition reporting originally on the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde. Got to see that car back in 2004, it was exhibited at mall about 30 minutes from Las Vegas. Paper has interesting article. I am always asking to advice on the forum and wanted to contribute something. Baltimore Sun June 17, 1934, four weeks after incident; Interview with Hammer and headline says "Read to get Dillinger..." Anyone know how to get in touch with James R. Knight? GUTTERRATT
Thanks for sharing your story about the news paper you were lucky enough to acquire. I just love Bonnie and Clyde I am really surprised I didn't get a BAR instead of a Thompson. I live in las Vegas use to visit the bonnie and Clyde car every chance I got, I haven't been for years, I will have to take a ride out to prim and check it out again. OCM
I'd check with the folks at Primm, to make sure it's still there. When I visited it, it was with Whiskey Pete's, then moved across the street, then the casinos were sold, then it went on display with Terribles Casino, all over the place.Might save that drive out there. There isn't much left of the poor old Ford, been stripped, replaced with repro stuff, on & on. When we inspected the engine, I think it was a 36 in there now, probably left over from the 80s Great American Race, when Newt ran it.Still, an impressive site. ineverlistentoFM
at least they have the bullet-ridden shell of the car, still, unlike James Dean's 303 Spyder--no one knows where that went--likely parted out/ and crusher bc Porsche's were unibody...& thanks for reading my post. B/C car looked pretty intact when i saw in in 2004, but maybe that was just repro stuff...i didn't check the engine...do you all know the year and model of the famous poses with Bonnie and Clyde on gang photo roll with the '33 texas plate? I'm trying to do a old-time photo with my gf. thanks...ps if anyone knows the owner of the real lic Texas 1933; 587-956 plate, drop me a PM, i'd like him/her to keep me in mind when/if he sells. OCM
The car in the Joplin photos is a 1932 Ford B-200 Convertible Sedan . They stole it from Bob Rossbrough in Marshall, Texas. He told me when he got the car back, he traded it in for a new Ford coupe with another V8, he said it was the biggest mistake in his life and laughed. But then, they were just a couple young Texas thieves.I had an original copy of one of the photos, made a copy and had Bob sign it for fun. He's passed now-I've seen the plate but don't know the owners. They had a shotgun that belonged to the dysfunctional couple also, and someone had restored it. Not a good thing to do. On the death car, I was a guest of the whiskey Pete's casino and was allowed to inspect it for about an hour or so, to document it. I was able to do this as I cloned the death car that Jim Knight now owns. The car is as exactly as it was the day they stole it from the Warrens. This is why I can tell people about it, with some authority. I traded a Dillinger death mask reproduction for the actual center bullet hole off the car. We had it and other items from the car in our private museum. There you go. OCM Edited January 7, 2013 by OCM
ineverlistentoFM
would love a copy of that photo, not sure if anyone can do it without harming the photo...would love to hear the story of how you came upon it. also, did they actually let you cut a pc of the car off so you would have the bullet hole? i put a c-list ad up seeing if anyone's got an early 30s ford rotting around here; might buy one and drag to my house (if able) take the front off and mount in the basement with my faux license plate... OCM
The photo and others I got from the Barrow family, now reside in the National Museum of Crime & Punishment in Washington DC.When the death car was run in the Great American Race in 1987, it was put into roadworthy condition as per the race official rules. The body was placed on a 1936 chassis. The front windshield had to be replaced for safe driving and what all. It was in marginal shape anyway, hanging together by a thread as you can imagine. When it was removed, a lot of it crumbled and it was replaced after the race, best they could.I've heard the casino has refused a million dollars for it . Took me around 8 years to clone it, tons & tons of research.I've been asked many time what it felt like sitting in the driver's seat. Actually not much, the whole inside is covered with thick yellowing plastic, lot of rust on the dash and the smell of smoke and the sound of gambling machines didn't do much, more interested in all the details to get correct. ineverlistentoFM
do you know where it sent after it was sold by the original owner and before it was raced? that would be an interesting story. does you car have bullet holes? OCM
It went to or actually leased to Charles Stanley, the " Crime Dr" for years, then I think it was sold to Ted Toddy's crime show, then couple others and the casino. Used to have the history on it, don't anymore or stored somewhere in a box. Not much interest in it these days-No, my car was pre-ambush, no holes.
