The military Lugers will all fire the way described by the OP.

 

On the other hand, Police Lugers had an additional safety that locked the sear upon removal of the sideplate. Those are the rare ones. Your friend has it reversed.

 

Here is a close image of the left side of my Banner Mauser "Eagle L" police Luger. You can see the piece of spring steel riveted to the receiver frame and extending over the top of the sideplate. That's the extra sear safety.

Nice looking gun there Curl. Matching numbers too. I have a parts box model myself, not quite as pretty as yours, but it still works. My C96 on the other hand does have matching numbers and is as pretty as yours, and will shoot better after I get some clips for it.
