M2 Carbine Ammo

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had much experience using the cheap steel-cased Tul Ammo or similar in their M2 carbines? I'm checking out ammo and see that .30 Carbine is available in steel cased. Will it run OK in a full auto without damaging the rifle? The cost savings vs brass-cased ammo is substantial and it's easy to burn through a lot of ammo quickly on FA.

Thanks

It depends on if your gun will function correctly with it or not. Try a small amount of s/c ammo and if it runs fine, you're good to go. I doubt you could run enough ammo thru it to damage anything cause that stuff is usually lacquer coated to inhibit rust and to enhance smooth feeding. However, sometimes that lacquer will build up in hot chambers and cause extraction issues so be sure to keep a clean chamber if you want to use a lot of that kind of ammo. All that being said some guns, AR's usually, won't run it reliably. Welcome to the Boards, Chief

Thanks Chief! Happy to hear that it's a possibility. I'll pick up a few boxes to try out. I too have noted that the steel cased ammo won't run in my AR's after about 15 rounds. It does, however, run fine in my HK's and Sig. Edited by Gunslinger

Thanks Jim! I'll order a couple tins of this. Such a large order will probably land me on some gov't list but like I said, full autos burn ammo like crazy. Price seems reasonable for today's market.

There ya go...

Try the Wolf/Tula on a small scale. It will either work or it won't. Start in semi and see if it performs OK. If you have any failure to extract then forget about it. If not, go to FA and evaluate. The lacquer coating is long gone from this stuff as they switched to a gray polymer coating for the same purpose awhile back. Steel is not as resiliant as brass and is prone to sticking in tight chambers that's why I say it will either work or it won't.

My only Carbine use of Wolf is in my M1 guns. No problems and in fact of the many brass loadings I've tried Wolf gives me the best 100 yd group from my QHMC. I have around 2,000 rounds through my 4 M1s. Flawless. I also have in the vacinity of 45,000 rounds of the stuff through my Colt M16, Savage TSMG, HKMP5 and a host of Semi Colt ARs, and various handguns in 45, 40 and 9. The only problems I've ever had were in my Glock 22 in 40 S&W. On three occaisions I had failure to extract and had to push the cases out with a rod. I don't shoot wolf in that gun.

If you plan to shoot a lot, at least give it a try.
