Whitey Bulger & 1921/28 Navy Thompson

Recommended Posts

Just to revisit this, I own a 28 Navy Thompson that was taken to a bank robbery by Whitey Bulger's gang members-

Bulger has received a lot of news media lately.

To long of a story to post ( and type) but in the early 1970s the Bulger gang members robbed the Manchester bank.

By this I mean the cops owned the Thompson and took it to the scene of the robbery- Thompson wasn't used or needed as the robbers had already escaped through a parking garage, later to be apprehended and killed.

Friend of mine was the crime reporter for the Manchester newspaper and has supplied loads of information on it, including a photo of the Manchester Det holding the gun outside the bank.

I bought the Thompson a number of years ago, like 5 or so.

Fun little history on this particular Tommy- great gun not beat up, good patina to it.

Or something. Interesting character, so to speak. Never really knew much about him. I have talked with the Manchester PD historian about the gun, they were restoring the old PD building there and turning part of it into a museum or such, been awhile since I talked with him. Sent him a photo with the Thompson and my 1933 Buick limo- Don't know if they used it or not but he was glad to have it.

For me one of the greatest things about the Thompson was the background research on it and the file on it now. That's the second greatest thing, owning it and firing it occasionally is # 1 .

Really need it now......Wonder if it would be wise to wrap the Thompson up and send it to the jail with a note asking him to autograph it ?

Probably not unless I want to be a cell mate.

From an AP news report:

A woman in the gallery taunted him as he was led away, apparently imitating machine-gun fire as she yelled: "Rat-a-tat-tat, Whitey!"

Yeah...no amount of Tommy-wielding, Bostonian-Irish mob enforcers are gonna bust him out, now. :)

Don't forget Crown Point, the escape-proof jail in 1934. ( plus TWO free Thompsons, well sort a )

  • 4 weeks later...

Nah he's in retirement now.... Three squares, doctors to care for him and a warm place to sleep.

That's pretty cool, Sandy...I bet ol' Whitey wishes someone would bust into the jail, and use it to spring him out, right about now! :)
