I have failure to eject malfunctions when mag is almost empty

Recommended Posts

I have a MKII that I bought a few years ago and have had to tweak and replace parts on to get to run worth a damn. However I still have one issue that continues to persist. On occasion (used to be all the time) I will have a failure to eject. Initially I thought it was a weak or damaged extractor or a misaligned ejector. But with some tweaking cleaning and replacement of the extractor spring the problem mostly only happens in the last three rounds in a 32 round mag and only on certain mags sometimes. It doesn't seem like it should be a magazine related issue.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? What were you able to find out was the culprit?

Does the extractor retain the case in the end of the bolt or does it drop into the body instead of ejecting?

Well it does when I manually put a case or dummy round on the bolt face with the bolt out of the gun. I haven't tried slow motion photography during firing to determine what happens then. My guess is that the case may be prematurely released from the bolt face on occasion. I have discovered that cleaning the extractor and extractor recess in the bolt seems to help. I have since replaced the original extractor spring with a NOS one out of the wrap when I compared the two the old one has indeed collapsed a bit. I have yet to test the new one though.

Start simple try:

1. Different ammo

2. Different mag

I've had rounds not eject when I tried weak frangible ammo. Also, the follower in the mag may make the last few rounds have a different attitude, perhaps dragging on the bolt and slowing it down. Just guesses.

Well I have noticed on some mags there is a decernable difference in the round angle on the first round in a fully loaded mag and when there is only one round in the mag using the round angle gage. I didn't think about that causing issues but it makes sense.

Sounds like you are well along troubleshooting your sten. As stated above, look at the Mag's. Compare the bullet angle with a gauge. Clean out the inside of the Mag's. Look for any corrosion. Check for any binding. Some dummy 9mm might be helpful. Edited by timkel
