Lancer
OK......for those of you that need your memory refreshed or never saw the original thread that I posted nearly a year ago......go to the link below. This new thread kinda takes up where that one left off. http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14660 Over the course of the last 10 months, I was able to locate & purchase both a WW 2 era trench gun barrel and a bayonet attachment/heat shield for my Winchester M-12 trench gun. Both pieces came very dear but I'm glad to have them. They may or may not be exactly correct for the serial # of my gun. The barrel has a "43" date which I think is about right for the serial # 1002xxx, the bayonet adaptor/heat shield is "w" marked. I would appreciate opinions on the correctness of the pieces. (pics below) My next problem is finding a gunsmith knowledgeable enough about Model 12s to install the barrel & make sure of proper function, all while preserving the original finishes. Taking this to my local gunsmith was a mistake & a waste of several months. The bayonet attachment/heat shield is missing the bead sight so that will need to be replaced, hopefully without damage to the original finish on the attachment. According to Poyer's book, the bead needs to be 0.170 inches in diameter and made of "German Silver or other white metal". Poyer also states that "W" marked attachments were introduced in June 1944 and were used primarily as replacement parts while Canfield's book says "W" marked attachments were used on later production guns. Either way, I think an unmarked attachment would be more correct for my gun but this is what I've got. I figure the attachment could easily be swapped out if I find a nice unmarked attachment. So far, I've come up with 3 possible gunsmiths that may be able to do the work. I have not contacted any of them yet to discuss the job. I would appreciate opinions about these 3 as well as any other Winchester Model 12 gunsmith suggestions. 1. The Shotgun Shop http://theshotgunshop.net/ 2. Wright's http://www.wrightsgunsmiths.com/index.html 3. Simmon's http://www.simmonsguns.com/site/ I have never dealt with any of them but all 3 seems to have pretty good Winchester Model 12 credentials. You guys have already given me a great deal of advice on my little project here and it is much appreciated. I couldn't get the last two pics to post, you will have to click on the links. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/Lancer1717/Board%20pics/M-12%20Heat%20shield/023_zpsf65330c1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/Lancer1717/Board%20pics/M-12%20Heat%20shield/021_zpsc63f0582.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/Lancer1717/Board%20pics/M-12%20Heat%20shield/017_zps26c4252e.jpg Edited October 6, 2013 by Lancer
