m60mgman
Wondering how you folks purchased your Thompson. Colt's can go for over 30k. While I can spend 30k I don't want to spend that kind of cash on a gun, I'd rather put it a car, home updates, or even the stock market. There is something about spending over 30k on a gun that irks me. How did you folks manage to do it? Investment money? Savings? Spare Cash? Home Equity?Spare Cash for my MGs. I coulda started in 1975, but didn't. Fast forward to 1999-2000, I told my wife I can buy MGs because I can get CLEO sign offs, she says "you don't need a machine gun." I bought a Maremont M60 ($16k), Vector Uzi ($2.75k), Colt M16a1 ($6.5k), and HK Fleming sear ($4.6k). Later I bought a DLO 1919 ($10k), and sold it a few years later to fund an AK47 ($13k), converted it to a Krink, and most recently I got a Powder Springs M10/45 ($4.6k). I bought a Savage 1928a1 parts kit last year. Well that was because I thought I might want a WH. Then I saw an an on Subguns. Now I have a Colt 1921A in process, going on 3 months now ($37.5k), the most I've ever spent on any hobby all at once. Heck the 1921 is almost as much as the rest combined! I might sell one or 2 of my older guns to keep the accounts stable. Yes it's an expensive club to join. But this is my last chance. It might get cheaper, like in the years after the crash, but the prices didn't go down much. The dollar is worth less and less, and I figure these aren't investments, but hobby items which happen to be artificially fixed in supply. But I don't think you'll see many Colts at bargain prices. Folks will tend to hold onto them. $30k is a lot but you only live once and we don't get younger!
Waffen Und Bier
It's only money. My first wife would have put it in a savings account drawing .5 to 1.5% interest. My second would have spent if 3 times over. It has been a great investment since 1985. Problem is, have to sell it. Overheard a couple guys at the gun show this past weekend. One said "My wife told me if I brought another gun home, I would have to get rid of something. I thought to myself "yeah, her." wv1928
I bought mine in Las vegas from a private person with no problem. I dealer kept it in his shop for over a year and I finally had to get ATF involved to get the gun. They sent agent to his shop and told him it better be shipped the same day they were there. I received the gun the next day. I also filed a formal complaint against the dealer as per requested by the ATF. The dealers shop was called Machine gun Kelley's. I don'y know if he is still in business but beware of his dealings.
LSU Tiger
I can't justify the current $100K+ for a 1970 Super Bird, but they're selling at that price. Somebody IS willing to pay the asking price for an item with finite numbers. Thompsons are no different. Do what you have to do to make the purchase, but don't over extend yourself.
