Picked up an amnesty registered WWII bring back Sten MK II SMG

Recommended Posts

I was never really looking for a Sten, but I came across someone selling an amnesty PPSH-41 and a Sten MKII that were both amnesty registered and brought back from WWII. The prices were too good to be true, but they were in fact true with the original amnesty papers still, so I picked them both up. They even are all numbers matching, which especially for the PPSH-41 barrel is amazing.

Here are pictures of the Sten and PPSH-41, since there is no Russian SMG section here. The guns look well used, but I like the battlefield pickup look especially when they were actually real battle guns, and the barrels and internal mechanics of these guns are still perfect. Many thousands of rounds shall be put down these barrels by me over the years :)

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Doesn't look like it ever had one. I'm pretty sure the older ones did not have the sight hoods, and it was added later before the war ended. That's why so many WWII pictures show them without it. Or maybe they just broke off easily? Who knows.

If it did, I'll just tell myself that it was knocked off during the battle!! haha

PPSH is interesting, it is only the second I have seen outside of wartime photos that did not have the front sight hood. Are there any marks indicating one had been installed?

The Sten looks like new. A fine example of an original. But the PPSH-41 looks like it traveled from Stalingrad to Berlin the hard way. Then somehow found its way across the Atlantic. Probably in a GI duffle bag. Lots of history on that one. If only they could talk.

You do not often find wartime photos of the PPSH without sight hood. When ever I find a wartime photo of PPSH's the sight hood is one of the first things I look for.

My PPSh 41 has a front sight hood, and it is an early 1941 dated one, with the tangent rear sight.

Yes, really!!!!!!!!. After looking at thousands of photos over a number of years those without the sight hood are the exception, you find many more that will show the sight hood.

By the way, if your second photo showing a German soldier with a PPSH is being used to prove you point, you need to look at it again. That one shows a PPSH with the sight hood.

I wonder why some have it and some don't? I guess they were just trying to pump them out as fast as they could, or someone was sleeping on the job after drinking too much vodka the night before and a batch got missed. It'd be interesting to know, but I guess we never will. Kind of neat I got a "rare" one.

As I recall the early sight hoods were spring steel that snapped in place over the sight post held by spring pressure, later they were welded on. I have a PPD that the hood is missing there are grooves on each side where the sight attached.

Somewhere in Russia or Germany those sight hoods are all over the landscape,
