Roland the Thompsongunner
Here is my Marine transit chest ready to deploy for battle at Tarawa! One gun is an original, the other is a current dummy. one of the drums is also a dummy. The rest is original.
dalbert
Nice chest and contents... In the second photo, the XX magazine pouch on the left looks like it may be a Reising pouch. It still works for Thompson mags, but will have more room between the loops and the magazines. I'd like to see closer photos of the USMC marked L-drum pouch. Bridgeport28A1
Neat looking chest. Where do you store the stocks? Frank Frank, they are stored underneath the receiver, frame and barrel assembly. The buttstock is positioned under the compensator. You should be able to see a buttstock in the top compartment. http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g374/TW56/USMC%20TSMG%20Chest%20complete/IMG_8672.jpg Ross
Roland the Thompsongunner
Yup they go right underneath the barrel. You dont have to remove the sling either. Just slide the stock off and place it in the holder. Then the barrel holder piece slides into place and keeps the stock secure. Here is a closup of the stock in its holder. There is also a picture of the other side where the spare parts box and pouch would be.
Roland the Thompsongunner
Dalbert, Here are some pics of the drum pouch. You are right about the usmc pouch being for the Reising. I sold the gun years ago but kept the pouch. Dan

Kilroy
That actually looks like it wouldn't be too hard to build a copy. Would you be interested in posting some more pictures and maybe some measurements? I might get bored one day and attempt to make one. Looks like its mostly pine board? Roland the Thompsongunner
No problem. I will get dimensions when i have some time. I have only seen a couple of these chests, but there seems to be two different versions. One is like Bridgeport28's box where there is only indentation on the side to carry and no handles. His interior is also a bit different and the sides are inletted on his for the dividers and mine is not. I am guessing his is the earlier type. Roland the Thompsongunner
A friend of mine brought by his transit chest today to compare to mine. His is the type that is different than mine. I still dont know for sure which is the first type or were they just made at a different location? emmagee1917
Does the packing list call for 4 5-cell XX pouches or just 4 XX pouches ? The first ones were 4-cell , were they not ? 4 X 4 = 16.Chris

shadycon
I was wondering; would the pouches be full and the other mags be extras? GK
Roland the Thompsongunner
I could not get the pouches to fit in the space with the mags in the pouches. Same goes for the drums. Maybe they didnt want them stored in pouches because of moisture during storage? I know canvas and leather can do a number on mags and guns with a bit of moisture around. emmagee1917
Ok , I THINK I figured it out now . Four five pocket pouches equals 20 cells . 16 cells are filled up with the XX mags , two with the two mags with the gun ( listed up with the guns , giving 18 total ) , leaving two empty . Would the accessory and spare parts containers ( one for each gun ) fit into the remaining two cells ?Chris Ps , the mag and a/s containers look like they'd fit aft the gun in the small space . This is assuming that the case is like the early Colt cases and not a web envelope. Edited September 23, 2014 by emmagee1917
Roland the Thompsongunner
The colt type spare parts tin would probably fit but the military used the leather BAR type leather case and a canvas bag for parts.
