Gerald Chapman, First Public Enemy Number One

Picked this up a while back. Not sure if I ever posted it. Displays nicely with the San Francisco Thompson and the other 1920's police stuff. And the capture notice "signed" by none other than.......

Nice early IO. Rather rare I'd say. I looked him up in Helmer's book, stole $2,400,000.00 in bonds & jewelry in New York.

Hanged him April 26, 1926 in Wethersfield, Conn.

Not that I'm aware of ? Most IOs seem to be mug shots. ( most ) Originals are quite collectable. Examples of mug shot photos used in various wanted posters. Typical.

Thanks, OCM. Found it on line a while back. If memory serves, it didn't cost too much (for what it is). Only thing that would have made the set better would have been a Hoover signature (even a facsimile). Cool pics you posted. I have a Dillinger flyer I got from a former 1950's Mid West crime reporter (who owns a former Kansas City '21 TSMG - you know who, please correct me if I'm wrong about the city). Don't know if my Dillinger is original, but he had a lot of neat stuff, so......

Not sure about with and without glasses mug shots, but he and his partner, Dutch Anderson used "gentlemanly" disguises to hide in plain sight. They were both scumbags of the highest order, but their story is a fascinating one, on par with that of Bonnie and Clyde or Dillinger.

Having an original mug shot with the IO is pretty cool, even tho not as popular as a Baby Face or Pretty Boy types. The above Dayton Dillinger mug shot was an original I had. Police made copies from the neg and passed them out after the killing of the Sheriff at the arrest ( In Lima) . These were like Sheriff's posters/handouts. When they ( Dillinger Bonnie & Clyde) made the big time with the FBI, they were mass printed and mailed out to PDs around the country- The original 1934 post office stamps are dead give a ways, they are original. Other ways to but to lengthy to go over here.

I think you sent this out before but I could be wrong.
