Barrel Threads for A/O W/H 1927A1 SBR Conversion

Recommended Posts

Hello Gents,

I'm new to the board but have owned this A/O W/H 1927A1 since 1989. I really enjoy shooting it but have always hated the long barrel on it that makes it look like a two handled crow bar. So I'm going SBR on this old friend (just got my stamp for it after 7 months). I see some of you have done this already and your guns look great, so maybe you can help me out. Are the barrel threads the same on my A/O West Hurley barrel as the barrels from IMA and Thompson Barrels? In other words; can I buy on of these barrels, take it to a proper gunsmith and have them swapped? In addition, my cutts compensator looks like it is either pressed or screwed on; there is no pin. I see that I can buy a barrel with or without threads at the sight end of the barrel. Can any body wise me up on the barrel end I need to attach my cutts gimmick. While I have your attention, I'm looking for recommendations of gunsmiths that know Thompsons and can do this work for me. I have read post on this site on barrel removal and I think I'll stick with a pro.

Cheers!

Your threads should be the same as any military barrel or any repro barrel made to original specs. As far as the compensator goes, my opinion is you're better off to find a threaded original to put on your new barrel if you want to keep one. They are of better construction and it takes a lot of hassle out of the process.

Gunsmiths, Deerslayer or PK here on the boards can do the work. If you don't want to ship it I guess just ask around at your local shops to see if they can handle it.

Welcome aboard and good luck with the project.

Jon

I would go for Green Mt Rifle Barrels or Thompson Barrels.com before IMA. There seems to be a lack of knowledge of the source, metallurgy used and the specs of the IMA barrels. Not saying their bad but I wouldn't want to be the one to put them to the test.

Well I had the barrel swapped out, it looks so much better. Thanks to all those that responded to my post.

The answer to my question, for anybody that wants to know, is that my stock Cutts (non-pinned) is threaded on. I hope this helps anybody doing the same to their rifle. I bought a barrel w/threated end and re-used the stock Cutts and had it pinned in place.

An original grip hanger bar WILL swap out for the ugly ¾" one you have now. Or Philadelphia Ordnance (reconbob here in the boards) makes new repros. I put one on my Kahr Thompson and it is great.
