My semi-auto PPSH is misbehaving...

Recommended Posts

Necessary preamble: I am NOT located in the US. The gun laws where I live are very different.

This is my very first post, hopefully I’ve come to the right place.

I recently picked up a beautiful all original matching numbers surplus PPSH-41 ($500 in local currency for those who are curious). Well, all original besides being modified to shoot open bolt semi-auto.

When I work the action with the trigger pressed the bolt does lock like a semi auto should. Yesterday however during our first range outing it seems quite happy to chug away in full-auto, at least when the drug magazine doesn’t jam.

I haven’t opened it up yet, but any idea what the problem could be?

The fire selector switch has been welded. I’ll upload photos if you guys think it could help diagnose the problem.

2nd problem is the drum magazine. The main spring seems a little week, the first rounds or so seem to feed correctly but the last 5 or so rounds are very hit and miss. Low spring pressure seems to let the rounds seat pointing nose down which invariably causes a jam. Has anyone had this before?

Thanks in advance for your input.

As to your first problem. A few pics of the trigger group would help. Sounds like the disconnecting trip just not working.

As for the drum. I would just give it a deep cleaning and lube. Or just replace to drum.

Welcome to the forum. Can you tell us more about where you're from and what the gun laws are like?

Thanks for the kind welcome :D

I'm in a country in western Europe, the laws basically are as follows:

Private individuals can own weapons from 2 main categories, B and C.

B category includes semi auto rifles, semi auto shotguns with detachable magazines, handguns of any kind (except black powder), pump action shotguns

C category includes bolt action rifles, lever/pump action rifles, semi auto rifles with fixed magazines (3 shot max capacity), black powder weapons, shotguns of all kind except short barrels/semis with detachable magazine or >3 capacity

Few weird things:

7.62 x39 and 5.56 automatically put a weapon in B category

.50 BMG is B category

pump action shotguns are classed in the C category if they have a rifled barrel (WHY???!!!) 61cm or greater

We can own an unlimited number of C category firearms. You have to be a member of a gun range and get checked out by a doctor. And this has to be done every year.

To own category B weapons, you have to do 3 supervised shooting sessions per year with a 2 month interval between sessions. Once that is done you can send off your paperwork to the local government office along with a ton of other stuff (copy of birth certificate, proof that you have a safe, criminal background check, etc...). After a few months if you haven't forgotten anything then hopefully you'll receive your purchase authorization that will allow you to purchase a category B firearm. Although it is important to note that there is a maximum quota of 12 guns for category B.

Machine guns were legal until the 1st of august this year, as I managed to get the paperwork done on my PPSH and a few others before the cutoff then my ownership authorization is grandfathered in. It's breaking my heart right now to see all the historic MGs that didn't managed to find homes being sent off to become scrap metal. Even museums are having to turn in their weapons.

In case you hadn't already guessed, carry of any kind is totally forbidden. Pepper spray is just about legal.

All guns are registered on a national database.

I follow very closely what happens in the US, and sincerely pray that what is happening here will never happen to you guys.

It is entirely conceivable that in the future the government comes knocking on the door requesting that we surrender our weapons.

I find it somewhat ironic that the very guns that were used to liberate this county in WW2 now no longer have a place here, even as historic artifacts.

Welcome to the boards! Thats odd were been told that the Europeans are just fine with the gun control setup in their countries. Not to get too political, I agree that the one thing that helped save Europe from a specific Government is what is now also being taken away. Wait, didnt he do that too???

I do enjoy hearing specifically what is allowed and not and also how real people actually view the situation not as the news like to portrays.

Hi Ron

To be honest, people like me are a minority in this neck of the woods.

You are absolutely right, during WW2 occupation the people were disarmed and after the liberation private citizens were allow to rearm themselves again, much to their delight.

And now we're being disarmed again. Oh well, I suppose history does repeat itself.... Wonder what will need to happen before we are allowed to arm ourselves again?

Me and my wife just got back from a few days vacation in California. I was astonished to learn that there is NOT ONE SINGLE gun shop left in whole of San Francisco! And was very disappointed to see anti-gun propaganda everywhere.

Welcome to the forum! What full autos do you own?

Thank you!

Not as many as I'd like:

Bren MK2

Sten MK2

And an UZI on the way

Those are good guns! So can you continue to buy more full autos since you are grandfathered in? Or is the situation that no one who owns any can ever buy any more? If you can buy more, I'd highly recommend an MG42. It's probably my most ridiculous machine gun that I own and is a blast to shoot. Enjoy your guns!!
