brucea4
I have read in the M60 Civilian Owners Guide which has lots of pretty interesting information on the M60 that most of the wear & damage occurs when the bolts slams home on an empty chamber. I would assume it is a design flaw? They suggest not completely firing the belt off and leaving a few rounds so the bolt never slams forward on an empty chamber. Any experience on this type of wear & damage?
BillyDixon
i always put a dummy round as last round in belt it cushions thebolt op rod slam on empty chamber that causes a lot of wear on bolt and op rod cam surfaces, this subject has been covered in great detail on many web sites just sayn.. brucea4
My 60 is in NFA jail so I'm checking up on things and gathering information. Putting a dummy round on the last link of the belt was my thought also....
StrangeRanger
Empties don't always feed well and Murphy says that bulleted dummies can get mixed in with the real thing. I use a single blank as the last round in each belt, works 100%
brucea4
I intended to mark the dummy round with a magic marker to avoid that issue.

brucea4
I do not reload and I don't like the idea of a blank as the last cartridge on the belt as I feel that will just dirty up the barrel faster. Any decent dummy rounds out on the market that are robust and can last a while being slammed in and out of the gun?
StrangeRanger
One blank after 99 live rounds is not going to be appreciably dirtier than 100 live rounds

DINK
The nice thing about using GI blanks is that they can be re-used. The "pop" as they go off isn't needed, so even after they have been through the gun a few times, they still work. If they get beat up, toss them and put in a fresh one. I have a huge supply of .308 blanks at the gun store where I work. People thought they would be cool to "requisition" as souvenirs when they were in the service, but after a few years it turns into "What am I keeping these for?" and they show up at the store wanting us to get rid of the blanks for them. I'm happy to accommodate them!

brucea4
Well, I purchased some blanks and am going to load one at the end of every belt. I like the idea!

Waffen Und Bier
Could one keep re-using the fired blanks?
StrangeRanger
Absolutely. All they're there for is to keep the bolt from slamming home in the barrel extension recesses. They soften the blow and prevent any damaging overtravel.
