Petroleum 1
All nice examples thanks for posting. Lot 1443 Model 12 will get a lot of play. That is a rare one.
Tom D
The parked Model 12 trench (Lot 1443) hammer price was $16,000. With the Buyer's premium, $18,400. The ones that surprised me were the Model 1897 trench gun that sold for $17,250 including the Buyer's premium (Lot 3471), the Remington Model 11 riot gun that hammered at $10,000 (Lot 3498), and the Stevens 620 trench gun that went for $10,925 (Lot 444). Petroleum 1
Tom...those two might be a record. Big bucks!! I was shocked at this one on GB the first auction had a non payer at $4194.00 and look what it did on the relist. The SN indi cates a 1920 mfg date. What was this buyer looking at ? https://www.gunbroker.com/item/885769570 Sent from my iPhone
johnsonlmg41
I've had several 11's and while that one was nice I have one that is close in condition and is matching and I'd put it at 2K max and I paid less than 1K 2 years ago? RIA doesn't disclose if the gun is matching, or if the label is inside the stock? I didn't bid on anything this time because I thought it would be a waste of time and they had little C3 of interest. At this point I'm not even sure I should bother reading the catalogs anymore? It's now like a casino and they always seem to win big?

I'm still grappling with 5-10K shotguns that have fairly high production numbers vs. MG's which we all know are scarce.I'm into the Stevens for $3500, so the downside can't be too far? Tom D
Can you post any photos of your acquisitions? The Rem 31 riot is not too common.
johnsonlmg41
This is the trench gun https://www.proxibid.com/STEVENS-520-30-12-ga-U-S-STAMPED-Shotgun-Very-Good-20-Barrel-Shiny-Bore-Tight-Action-Properly/lotInformation/58298300 The Remington 31 is rough, but it will serve the purpose of trying it out in the FBI case. Price was not that bad....relatively speaking https://www.proxibid.com/REMINGTON-31-12-ga-RIOT-Shotgun-Very-Good-20-Barrel-Shiny-Bore-Tight-Action-A-Fine-RIOT-GUN-wi/lotInformation/58298798 There was another riot in the auction I wanted, but as a novice (at best) I referred to Bruce's book and while the gun looked right it was way out of bounds in serial number range to be correct. It still went for a bunch of money however? Went after a an S prefix Ithaca 37, but someone wanted it pretty bad. Any input would be very welcome! Tom D
I think you did well. The 520 appears to be a solid example for a decent price. And I think you paid a fair price for the Model 31 riot too. If the Model 31 was in excellent condition it probably would of sold for two or three times that amount. It's an early one with only the ordnance mark on the stock. I've got the same gun with a serial number a few hundred higher than yours.

I was the next highest bidder on the 520I didn't really need another one but it seemed cheap. If I knew another member wanted it, I wouldn't have bid
johnsonlmg41
Guys, thanks for the help and commentary. Bmarvin, if it wasn't for a bunch of us bidding against each other auction sales would be terrible! I think the legitimate collector community is fairly small overall so getting bid up at auction by someone with one degree of separation is rather common, even more so with NFA items. I'm looking at my sheet and that was as high as I was comfortable going. Another $100 and it was yours! A similar thing occurred last year at Morphys. I was bidding an item, hit my top number and got outbid. A friend calls me a half hour later to tell me he's there and a guy we both know just bought a really rare gun, but had sort of hoped he would get outbid, because he was one increment over what he wanted to spend? My buddy then leans over and tells him who he was bidding against......well that story will be laughed about for some time! There was another lot I placed a first starting bid on yesterday only half interested, assuming someone would surely out bid me, the lot comes up, the auctioneer pauses for maybe two seconds and hammers it sold and I get this sort of mixed emotion thing going on. Sort of happy, sort of O sheet moment, I guess I just bough an 8 foot long rifle.....how flipping much is the shipping going to be on that? How am I going to hide that one from the wife? I come here for absolution!
johnsonlmg41
The guns came in and I'm quite happy with them. The model 31 suffered from glare in the auction photos making it appear to me to have less finish than I thought. It's still a well used gun, but worked out for what I needed. Now I need an early Ithaca 37 riot! The 520 appears to me to be unfired? I've included a pic of the bolt. I removed dry cosmo from the barrel and it's mirror bright. Years ago in an odd auction lot I acquired a bayonet I figured I'd never use, but was too lazy to sell......so while not period I'm considering putting it on for display? Those bayonets seem to be all over the map on price? Somewhere there is a scabbard, but with hours looking for the bayonet (and just finding it by accident today) I think that's out for the moment. The sling that came on the 520 is vintage but torn at the hook/rivet area so I'll likely replace it with the vintage NIW sling sitting there. I tore the 31 down and cleaned it completely, but I'm thinking I will leave the 520 alone other than oiling the outside and barrel.
