H & R Model 50 problem

Recently I was at the range with the Model 50 and the weapon operated fine in semi-auto mode ( ie ) pull the trigger and the gun would fire then release the trigger and pull the trigger and the gun would fire and continue until the 20 round magazine was empty. NO PROBLEM!!!!

Then I went to FULL AUTO mode with a 20 round magazine installed and I pulled the trigger the gun would fire off 6 to 8 rounds and then stop, I then would release the trigger and then repulled the trigger again and the gun would fire off 6 to 8 rounds and stop and then I released the trigger and repulled the trigger and the gun emptied the magazine.

I had ( 6 ) 20 round magazines loaded and I fired them all and I experienced the same scenario above on ALL ( 6 ) magazines in that I had to continue to repeatedly pull the trigger to empty the magazines in FULL AUTO mode. BIG NEW PROBLEM!!!!!

ANY ideas as to the CAUSE of this BIG NEW PROBLEM is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Give us a hint

When it quit, what was happening?

Failure to strip the next round from the mag?

Failure to feed into the breech?

Failure to ignite the primer?

Failure of the auto-connector to override the sear?

Something else?

I had a similar experience that was a result of tolerances/wear on an early-model action bar. It started to intermittently not catch and activate the trip lever. I replaced the action bar with the newer version that had a deeper cut/cavity to catch the trip lever. Just comparing the two action bars when hand-cycling showed a clear difference in firmly grabbing and activating the trip lever. I didn't have to replace the trip lever so I attributed the problem to the action bar.

Edit: Note that anything slowing down the action bar (rubbing against stock/receiver/magazine, springs, etc.) could produce similar symptoms.

Sounds like mine when I bought it(1994), but I was only getting 2, or 3 rounds.

I tried all kinds of things, no internet to fall back on.

I figured that if it worked in semi, & not in auto, that it could be related to the selector switch.

I removed the selector, & carefully inserted a mag, it emptied the mag, Then all 5 that I had.

I bought a new selector, & it's run great ever since.

I have no idea what the issue was, & never took the time to find out.

Maybe one day I'll do some checking, as I still have the old selector. The old one is an early one with turned down ends, which is why I kept it., The replacement is a "military" one with turned up ends.

It worked for me, YMMV.

I realize this is an OLD thread, but this info MAY help solve someone's similar problem

When switching from FA to semi be sure to retract the action bar (cocking handle) 1/4" to disengage the auto connector lever from the action bar.  (as per the instruction manual) Failure to do so will result in the bending of the sheet metal L-shaped "leg" part of the selector, that is designed to lift the auto-connector lever off of the action bar. Once the leg is bent, the auto lever will remain engaged with the action bar, causing the weapon to fire in full-auto mode in the semi-auto position.
