har1690
Trying to understand pintel mounts. I see there are short and long pintels. M142 cradle mount for M60 machine gun - Other Gun Accessories & Parts at GunBroker.com : 934987086 < this one appears to be the short pintel., So my question is what type of mount is this short pintel designed to go into. Are there pros and cons of the short vs the long pintels? This cradel mount listed is the one I bought and like to know what tripod is it to be used in. Thanks in advance. johnsonlmg41
I have mine in a jeep pedestal, but it fits in most mounts including some marine gunnel mounts. It will also fit in several tripod bases such as an M63 AA base or a 1917a1 browning tripod. Lots of choices in very common mounts. The provision for the can makes it the first choice for most M60 shooters, since that provides the easiest most dependable feed source. mattnh
I think you will generally find A LOT more mount compatibility with long pintel into a socket mount. For this reason, the long pintle version of the M142 seems to command more $$$(and is more difficult to find) Edited June 13, 2022 by mattnh

mattnh
Can the smaller pintel be removed and install the larger one? Depends on the mount, some mounts use a bolt-in pintle. However, on all the the M142s I've seen, the pintle is just welded on, so replacing it would entail cutting off the exiting pintle and welding/(drill+bolting) a new one in its place.Def simpler to just purchase the pintle variant you want.
