This was comprised of a fixed firing pin bolt, which I have, and an unspecified length of MG42 recoil spring used without the standard MP40 recoil spring housing assembly. leid Posted July 16, 2004 Author Report Share Posted July 16, 2004 Abwehr, I appreciate the info. RTG had them listed for $11 so I ordered one. I am trying to find out if this late war recoil setup will give the MP40 the very high cyclic rate that some of the WW2 vets, including my dad, remember. These vets keep giving me accounts of the german's getting 2-3 very quick bursts per mag. And I never could figure it out because the MP40 normally cycles at about 550 rpm. According to what I have read recently, the late-war guns used about 1/2 of an MG42 recoil spring with the fixed firing pin bolt. This effectively doubled the cyclic rate to about 1100 rpm since this stronger spring would not allow the bolt assembly to travel completely to the rear of the receiver-tube. Anyway, I am going to experiment with this setup and see if it will run like the "trench broom". My dad did a reenactment at the D-Day Museum in New Orleans on the 4th of July. He put on his WW2 uniform and fired a fine old MP38 with the blank adapter attached. The promoters asked him to hose down a group of "germans" in uniform, but he declined. He was afraid someone might get hit by the material coming out of the barrel of the weapon even with blanks. Good, clear thinking on his part.
