johnsonlmg41
refinished and very expensive..... 90% or more are refinished, but that doesn't seem to affect selling prices much. Not sure if the buttstock is supposed to be bakelite, I'd have to look that up? No tripod pic, so you'd have to assume it's a $700 MG3 tripod or a 200 AA tripod? I'd rate it at "investment grade".....for Ruben, not so much for the buyer?
StrangeRanger
He doesn't say if it's all matching - which means it probably isn't. You'd need many more pictures to determine if it was worth a trip to inspect in the flesh. I'm certainly not an expert but the price does seem a bit aspirational

johnsonlmg41
"matching" isn't a thing on MG42's. Very few parts were ever numbered, and that's mostly on early guns and more so certain codes. I've seen some bipods numbered, topcovers, butt stocks, charging handles and bolts. I've never seen a gun that was ever matching with more than three parts that are numbered. Lots of codes on different parts that can be period specific, but not numbered. Scarce to have two parts with the same numbers. MG34's completely different story. MG42 is a big boy toy and a killing machine! HTH
Rekraps
So back to the question: any idea of market pricing on MG42's?
StrangeRanger
Well there's this one: https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=531611 ...and then there's this one: https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/89/406/german-mg42-machine-gun-class-iiinfa-fully-transferable Based on the first one Ruben's is a bargain; based on the second one, not so much Keep an eye on this one: https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/_N__EXCEPTIONAL_GERMAN_WWII_MG_42_MACHINE_GUN_WITH-LOT592775.aspx Edited December 1, 2023 by StrangeRanger

Then the buffer spring tube (47) slides through the firing pin retaining nut (46) and the firing pin is reinstalled. Basically in the end the buffer spring assembly becomes a single unit with the firing pin and firing pin retainer nut. I really don't want to remove the firing pin if at all possible since it is staked in place. 9 hours ago, StrangeRanger said: Well there's this one: https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=531611 ...and then there's this one: https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/89/406/german-mg42-machine-gun-class-iiinfa-fully-transferable Based on the first one Ruben's is a bargain; based on the second one, not so much Keep an eye on this one: https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/_N__EXCEPTIONAL_GERMAN_WWII_MG_42_MACHINE_GUN_WITH-LOT592775.aspx First one is mfg date of 1964! GEJ
IMO I'd say 42s are ranging from 50000-65000 right now then more given how early it is or if it's a Transferable MG3.

johnsonlmg41
Well, there are no transferable MG3's so you don't have to worry about spending 200K there, but the one in the morphy auction was the next closest thing and brought a LOT because it is indeed rare. These are a pair of original finish guns to use as a baseline. One has some early features such as the adjustable bipod and matching finish, while the later gun you can see, like MP44's finishes, became mixed. The butt stock has a band clamp instead of soldered wire, and a few other details that separate them. The guns are also different mfrs. which also dictates finish (depending on when it was made) and subcontractor parts sources with different finishes and methods of manufacture for those parts. johnsonlmg41
Yes, that is potentially true? How they potentially got imported here within a few months of production starting and registered, must have been quite a feat?

So yes 3-4 months before the amnesty.
83Baron
Not a bad price, market wise, for the 42 if it recently sold. Edited February 24, 2024 by 83Baron
