Good question! I've posted it over on the M14 forums and will post the answer here if we get one.

The consensus is that it's simply a hole for giving the firing pin a little squirt of lubricating oil.

That's what I thought but then it's a free floating pin so no lubricant should be necessary. Maybe it is either a pressure release hole to prevent any gas pressure buildup.... we'll see.

.Gas relief holes were added to later M1 carbine bolts as well.
