US made WWII small arms were miracles of quality and quantity, unique in the world. All parts were interchangeable. Indeed, no hand fitting was allowed, not even to wood. Files were not even allowed to be used by assemblers. German small arms required expert builders and hand fitting. That's why parts were serial numbered. You have some reading to do about the US Army Ordnance Branch in WWII. Ah, that's the beauty of it. I don't have to read slanted and incorrect ordnance branch reports (though I have), I have all of the guns at my fingertips to compare and contrast the differences. It's why German guns are the pinnacle of collecting worldwide. Indeed, it was all about quantity here. There are no "miracles" going on in an M1A1 thompson, nor any well thought out engineering to update the gun from the teens, nor any small arms development. The good news is collecting US guns is easy, since there aren't many. While many German guns had numbered parts, it does not mean they were necessarily hand fitted and are not interchangeable. I don't recall any parts that ever needed hand fitting when swapping parts from one gun to another. To this day there are German steel formulas and engineering that can't be duplicated in the US. reichstall
Ok sorry it has been a couple of days. Don't get me wrong it is all good whether they match or not is of no importance to me. I was just stating it is high odds that things won't match. and I agree when they do, and it is without a doubt they are real they should and do command top tier prices. But on that note, there is a company in Poland that is reproducing stamps that match original stamps to a tee also inspectors stamp that we see often, so there is a market, and it is being stamped, or there would not be a manufacture producing these. I am a German dagger collector, and it is a mind field where one small thing or stamp can mean thousands of dollars difference. As for finish this is also a big difference in daggers so I am sure it would carry over into firearms so many different was to age an item wear marks and such. Whenever there is a chance to make a buck, these folks will go to great lengths to do it. The best resource is the online forums that can and do offer help. But as we have seen the bad guys read them too and change their stuff to match what we are saying. I have seen fake stamps that have been made with an error that was seen in the original stamp 80 years ago. But in the end, it falls down to do you like it and what are you willing to pay. By the way been burned for several thousand before.
