I'm sure it'll still go for $12,000, before the 22% house premium, and the 5.5% sales tax.

And the hammer price is $13,500! Which after house premium, sales tax, and transfer fees, comes to... $17,412.50!

A fool and their money!

WOW

People sure get their brain overheated in auctions, don't they?

Remember when this 1921 sold in 2017:

Those bidders had some fire in their belly.  Maybe some booze as well.  I'm not a 1921 guy, but I remember being amazed by the 90k.

Thanks all!  I’ll keep looking and saving.  I overbid on my 1919 from Poulin’s a while ago and feel like I missed out on a Westy M1 that I bid on last Nov that went for 17k - but I think their listed sale price doesn’t include premium & tax. So maybe that wasn’t such a good deal after all.

I appreciate the advice.  Thanks.

You don't need to go the auction route to get your hands on a westie or low end USGI Thompson.

In fact, you would probably do better price-wise on Gunbroker or Sturm or one of the dealers.

People get excited when stuff is listed at the auction houses like Julias and they tend to overbid.  And some of the auction-house buyers are the "private jet" type and they simply do not care how much they overpay.

West hurley Thompsons come up for sale pretty frequently on Gunbroker.

There are 4 west hurley 1928s on gunbroker right now, including this hideous thing:

You don't see as many westie M1s for sale, I don't think they made as many of them.   1928 models seem to be more popular than M1 type.  Personally, I like the M1 better, and I have both.

If I was getting a westie, I would probably stick with an M1, unless I knew that the gun had been worked over by a good gunsmith, or I saw it run good.  The 1928 is a much more complicated mechanism than the M1 and there is a lot more to go wrong dimensionally.  IMHO.

I think this is a really good time to buy a Thompson, they seem to be undervalued right now.

I didn't want to come right out and say it, but the Thompson in this thread here is pretty much the worst gun I ever saw.

Recon Bob showed me a reweld in his shop that he was repairing, where the front and rear of the receiver were completely out of alignment, there must have been 20 degrees of bend in the receiver, it looked like a banana.  That one was at least sort of repairable.

I have a question for you experts:  how much of this rusty hulk could someone like recon bob replace without running afoul of the law?

It occurred to me that if the front 1/3rd of the receiver was replaced, it would have a chance of at least holding a mag and discharging rounds safely.

I don't know if the price is good or bad, I haven't priced them in a while

maybe some of these Thompson experts can advise on that

In my opinion that is high for a west hurley. I am sure others will chime in with their opinion.
