Just got my S-NAC!

Recommended Posts

The mail man came earlier today and delivered my Thompson. It's not my first machine gun, but it is my first Thompson and I couldn't be more happy about it.

I bought the gun from Ohio Ordnance Works back in December. It came to me on a very slow paper Form 4 since I decided to do a C&R transfer. I'd have had the gun many months ago if I'd have had it sent to my dealer and then eForm'd to me ... but oh well.

The gun is S-NAC-33 which I've seen briefly referenced in a few books and in some old threads here. I own a lot of guns, but this is certainly the only one with a "famous" (big finger quotes) serial number. 😁

I'm in Virginia and I understand some of these NAC prefix guns went to the Virginia State Police. I'll put in the FOIA request soon and see if I can dig up some details. As a Virginian that would be a really cool connection.

I haven't shot the gun yet but I'm planning to rectify that tomorrow.

Cort Tompkins,

Welcome to the Thompson forum on MachineGunBoards.com. Congratulations on NAC 33. I have known about this NAC Thompson since it appeared for sale on subguns.com in 2004. NAC 33 is featured on page 112 of my book, A Thompson Compendium. It is included in the chapter, The NAC Thompson Guns - 40 pages. Your correct about Virginia State Police owning a number of the crate or NAC Thompson guns. Most of Virginia State Police NAC Thompsons had Colt receivers but NAC 17 had a Savage receiver.

I will be glad to help you file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The new ATF FOIA request system is now web based. I make it very easy for the requestor.

Contact me at tkd5501@fuse.net

if you would like to discuss.

Hi TD., thanks for the info! I purchased several of your books, including Compendium, when I bought this gun in December.

I've just submitted my FOIA request online. I did a similar request for my M16A1 a little more than a year ago and I've used the same verbiage for this request. The M16 request didn't turn up anything too earth shattering (my M16 is an otherwise uninteresting Colt commercial gun), but it did dig up some correspondence on cool 1970s Colt Industries letterhead.  I'll certainly post whatever history I find on S-NAC-33 here when the request is fulfilled.

Disassemble and check your bolt parts closely before firing. It appears that you are possibly at least missing a buffer, as the pilot is protruding out way too far.

A detail like that instantly catches our eye.  But when the wife walks and and asks "Notice anything different?", we got nuthin'.

Ahh yes, I see. It looks like the buffer was on the wrong side of the buffer pilot flange? I've replaced the old buffer with a new plastic/rubber buffer.  I think this one came from Numrich.

That's how you fix it!

Ain't that the truth? We're usually too busy looking at "other" parts of her, most of the time. LOL

Cort Tompkins,

Thank you for purchasing a few of my books. Good deal on filing a FOIA request. It will certainly be interesting to see the first registration document. Perhaps you will be able to attend a Thompson Show & Shoot in the near future with NAC 33. These events now happen twice a year!

I definitely intend to go to some of the shoots in the future.  I didn't register for the one in August in time since I didn't expect my Form 4 to come through as "quickly" as it did, but I expect I'll make it to both next year.  I've driven around to shoot a few subgun matches this summer and it will be useful to have a 5320.20-free subgun I can take somewhere on a whim!

Where would be the best place to pick up a copy of your book?

Hi Kilroy,

Thank you for your interest in my 3rd book, A Thompson Compendium. I know you will enjoy it. All five of my books are available on Amazon.com. Search on Tom Davis, Jr. I sell autographed copies a little cheaper but do not accept electronic payments - personal check, cash, cashier's check or money order only. Send me an email at tkd5501@fuse.net for ordering instructions.

I will have copies of all my books available at the upcoming All Thompson Show & Shoot in Ohio (a great event). If you have purchased my books from Amazon.com, bring your copy(s) and I will be glad to personalize it.
