Sten versus PAWS Sterling Sub Machine gun

Recommended Posts

For me the 16" LOP is a deal breaker on the sterling.  Great mags, reasonably smooth, but that's where it ends for me.  If I can't shoulder it quickly and it's not comfortable it's pointless.   I'd do a Lanchester or any original German version, or possibly a swedish K before a sterling.  I've never even tried it with a jacket on.  Nice hip shooter though.  I even looked into fixing one of them, but the stock geometry just won't work.  It's the same reason why no other country bought Thompsons.  Any military gun over 14" LOP is unsaleable.

I have a Sten, which I'm happy with.  My question is how does the PAWs Sterling compare to a STEN?  Are they comparable?  Does the PAWS shoot better?  Any opinions would be helpful, as I'm debating whether to buy one.  Thanks

No question that the Sterling is the APEX of open bolt SMG's, with the most reliable operating system and best magazines ever designed. It is 100% reliable and a great shooter (just like the STEN or any other open bolt SMG). Johnsonlmg41's comments on the LOP have not impacted me at all, and I have found the gun to be a great shooter and an even better looker. Mine is a DLO/Andrewski (of course) gun that just is outstanding. My choice, given a tube STEN (not C&R) and and tube Sterling would go to the Sterling.

That's something I would not have considered.  I will have to take some measuremnets of my weapons to see what I am comfortable with.  Thank you for your feedback!

The stock is an engineering nightmare.  It is impossible to deploy it in anything like a timely manner.  Just what a British Para need when dropping into a hot LZ...NOT

Correct, but for us Forum guys, when was the last time you had to deploy the Sterling stock in a timely manner? Too funny.

You jump weapons cased anyways.  Nothing expedient about that.  LOL.  I know you went to Ranger school, do you remember jumping weapons in ranger school?  I don't remember.   I may be trying to forget that very fun part of my life.

Thank you, guys for the feedback.  I honestly am just wondering if it's something worthy of adding to the collection.  OR, if I should wait for something else to come along.  There is one on gunbroker for 12k.

I'd jump on that! Even if it needs some cosmetic work, that's a great deal. My memory of a night jump (helicopter, two person jump zone) is not good. It was just getting dark and of course I had not volunteered for the jump (don't want to get hurt and recycled) but as luck would have it. I was carrying the M14 and of course the ruck was way too heavy... anyway, my classmate jumped first and I followed and for some reason, even with the lowered pack I landed on top of him. Soft for me, not so much for him. The carrycase for the m14 was big also..... Glad I didn't have the PRC-77 (shows you how old I am!).

Thanks.  I didn't think it was a bad price.  We had the PRC-77 too, but it was encrypted.  Which was another couple pounds.
