LDog2012
Hello, new poster here. Can anyone tell me the current wait times for a transfer on Form 4 (Individual)? The ATF website says 41 days (as of Sep 5), but not sure how accurate that is. Thanks for the help. Edited September 23, 2024 by LDog2012
spall
See here for their current estimates by form and submission type: https://www.atf.gov/resource-center/current-processing-times Those estimates are pretty close to my experience. Individual submissions go much faster than trusts these days.

jonnyjon88
I just bought a thompson a few weeks ago and the form 4 individual took 5 days
GoodStuff
Is a form 4 a form 4 regardless of what's being transferred? I ask because I should hopefully have a Thompson to transfer in the next few weeks. I've been getting suppressors in under a week lately. The last two were 4 days including a weekend. I submitted on Friday afternoon, and had them approved before lunch on Tuesday.
tommyboy
Sometimes form 4 approvals can take longer with machine guns that have not transferred in many years. Reason being is ATF needs to go back to the original registration to be sure that things like manufacturer, model, barrel length and overall length are correct. In fact, it’s not uncommon for ATF to send a request for photographs of the gun’s serial number as well as a picture of the gun with a tape measure showing overall length and barrel length. GoodStuff
The gun was on a form 5. Transfered to a member here on a form 5. It has been reactivated and now waiting on the form 2 to come back so it can be transferred back to my state on a 3. Then on a 4 to me. It had been on the original 5 for a long long time. I did send pictures of everything mentioned previously when transferring off the original form 5. I'm hopeful that since all of this has been pretty recent that the form 4 will be quick once it gets to that point.

Bridgeport28A1
A paper Form 4 is a whole different animal when it come to approval times versus a E Form 4 that has a SOT. Individual to individual still must file paper Forms.

That's just how it is unless you want to deal with having an SOT. Been there, done that, and even though I've spent 2K+ in taxes this year and am waiting many months, it surpasses the hassle of an SOT in the long run. I think one of these days we'll be back "pre" efiling where paper forms all came back in less than 90 days when gov was semi-competent. There is clearly a problem when some people get approvals in 24-48 hrs. and others wait 8 months. There needs to be some middle ground?

My feeling is that like commercial work now-a-days, most of the ATF staff is remote and some of the employees are taking advantage of this situation...... not to work very hard. jonnyjon88
If you do an individual form 4 efile from dealer to you, it should only take a week or 2, based on what ive been seeing lately and how long mine took.. all you can do is start the process and see what happens! Also ATF received the form 4 today in the mail. Edited October 11, 2024 by Outsider

tommyboy
Just completed three form 4’s in the last two months from an individual to a dealer and they were all 7-8 weeks pending to approval plus another 10-15 days to receive the paper copy in the mail.
