Owning a Thompson Submachine Gun in Canada?

Recommended Posts

Yes, there are a few of us lurking here.🙂

Without going into great detail, as Canadian gun laws are very convoluted, all fully automatic firearms are prohibited and have been since 1978. I'd have to look it up to be sure but I think it was effective Jan 1, 1978. However, the owners of the firearms at that time were "grandfathered" and allowed to keep their property. We can buy and sell among this steadily dwindling group (we are dying off) until none of us are left. I estimate there are, possibly, a couple of hundred of us in the entire country. It is almost impossible to shoot a fully automatic firearm in Canada.

I think if you did a google search of "the history of gun control in Canada" you'd find some decent information.

Two of my guns as set up for a show display. The top one is an early Savage 1928, serial 22802, New York address with patent dates. British proofs. It would have been from an early British "cash and carry" contract. Thought to have been sent to a Canadian internment camp and likely used very little. Unfortunately we're not able to trace the history of our guns in Canada as well as you can. The bottom Thompson is a Savage M1 and has the correct M1 bolt. Interesting that it has the protected rear sight ears. Serial 193324. Both guns have matching upper and lowers. The little one is 1/3 scale and was made by a gentleman in Quebec. It doesn't fire but strips like the real gun and even the safety works. Quite the little work of art and a great conversation piece.

Cheers

Mr. Canuck great info. And nice items there. Canada has had those issues since 1971 when i was first starting to deal there. around 1980 was trying to get AR-10'S OUT OF THERE. AND SENT IN A FEW GERMAN P38'S. and later to buy the Mp-38's which went no place fast.

DID GET SOME FAL PARTS. i exported another P-38 to new Zealand.was always sad about any of it because knew it was never coming back. Blake Stevens WAS A GOOD BUDDY, and did bizz with him. sadly that operation is long gone.very very few places left in the world to deal with. ask anyone who has been into it for over 50 years. they will tell you the same thing. If they don't they never did any bizz at all.

anytime i want to feel good about Canada i watch Cagneys Captains of the Skies.

IT KEEPS ME IN GOOD SPIRITS. THANKS FOR THAT GREAT POSTING.
