M1A1 lower not marked with a serial #

I have a late production M1A1 lower which doesn't have the serial number stamped under the trigger guard. I assume that is normal?

The lower is a AO Bridgeport and the upper (torch cut) is a Savage, if that makes any difference.

AT3 pages 173, 186-187

The reason the number was eliminated from the frames, was often the incorrect serial number was being recorded on mis-matched guns.

a Technical Bulletin ORD 141 was issued to address the problem.

Frank states in his book that the later made AO Thompson trigger groups were not marked with serial number. This became the practice following the issuance of a directive  by the Army that mis-matched lowers should have the numbers struck or removed.

That all makes sense as my torch cut kit had mismatched upper and lower. If the trigger guard had been marked, it probably wouldn't have had the same serial number on the upper.

As for Frank's book, I just scored a copy of his most recent edition at a local used book store.
