Thoughts on this early MP38u40 “Tropical”(?) pouch

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

First let me state that I have sought, and have been permitted to post for the purpose of inquiry and sales of items by the owner.

Secondly I’d like to present for opinions on this mint/unissued very early (1939) MP38u40 pouch.  I have received nothing but favorable responses from fellow collectors (Within my close private circle) but wish to open up to others opinions and evaluations.  My main interest is to see if these were done for the purpose of Tropical issue, as due to its date of manufacture (1939) we saw many leather examples of these pouches?  I am also planning on selling this, and would like your opinion on a fair price?  Any additional pictures or information are available upon request.  Thank you, Jack

Nice! This variation was not specifically for tropical issue. It was simply a manufacturing variation. It's a shame that its mate is not present. A complete set would easily fetch $1,500-$3,000, orphaned single pouches much less. The set would be impossible to complete.

My own rig:

OK, then an asking price of $1200, fair?

It'll sell or it won't at that price. Any number I mention would be just an opinion, as I have no money on the table.

I'd describe it as "unissued, with light storage wear". It's the nicest MP38/40 left side pouch I've ever seen. Most were used and worn out as the war progressed. An example made in 1939 is rare indeed!

Thanks for posting the detailed pics!

As it happens, I own a full set of almost identical original pouches. This is most assuredly a Luftwaffe pouch (1/2 set), in excellent condition. My full matching set cost me $2,400 four years ago, with 1/2 pouch items, in similar condition going for $1,200 or so. The selling issue for you will be it's a 1/2 set and collectors assembling a "rig" would want a full set.
