Riversong
Hi Folks! I am in Canada, licensed as a business (FFL equivalent) to possess/import/export machine guns I'm not very knowledgeable about the Brens and there's an Italian 30-06 example on the way to me from Europe now. I've seen topics here for converting 303 brittish guns to other calibers, but what about converting a 30-06 to 303? Has anyone had a chance to try? Would 303 magazines fit the action? With an adapter to be made? Then a barrel and bolt? Or a 308 conversion? I'm guessing this one could be accomplished with just a barrel swap provided 308 feeds ok from 30-06 mags? I already have MGs in 303 (Lewis) and 308 (MG-34 conversion) and this would let me use ammunition I already have though the whole concept of caliber conversions is a central part of my collecting so this is also something I'd like to attempt out of interest. Somehow I have not picked up a 303 Bren here - they are common enough so it has always been something I could tell myself I'd do later...
1gewehr
Probably a lot of work. The .30-06 round is rather longer than the .303, so .303 magazines won't work. The bolt would probably need to be changed, too to accommodate the wider rim. And the barrel would need to be changed as well. I'd imagine that .303 ammo is more common up there than .30-06. But, I'd keep it in .30-06 if it was mine.
Riversong
No intention to make it permanent - just to have an ability to swap calibers. Like I do on a mg-34 - can swap 8mm to 308 and back. 30-06 would be a completely new caliber for me. 303 and 30-06 are about the same as far as common goes, but I already reload 303 and 308 for mg use.
