Adding An MP-40 to My Collection

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

My first post on this Forum (re: picking up a Thompson SMG):

was so successful that I'm back for more.

This time around I'm in the hunt for a nice representative example of a World War Two MP-40 and - as was the case with my Thompson purchase - I would greatly appreciate your input. I'd like a C&R eligible (transferable directly to me) example that I can put an occasional magazine through.

While an all numbers-matching numbers piece would be optimal, my understanding is that those are not often found - even in the case of WW2 bring-backs - so I will likely have to relax my expectations a bit.

To start the conversation and to establish a frame of reference, what are your collective thoughts on this one with respect to price, condition and collectability:

Naturally, if anyone has - or knows of - a nice MP-40 for sale, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and input,

Skip

Hey, Skip!

Good luck in your quest. You'll find what you want but it may take some time.

I'd pass on the example linked in your post unless a mismatched, refinished gun would be acceptable. These were originally hot dip blued, which was not a durable finish. A gun with handling rash should have a noticeably thin finish, missing almost entirely at the gripping areas. The asking price would be appropriate maybe for an original, all-matching, excellent condition example.

That particular MP40 has been refinished, if that has any bearing to you and it’s mostly non-matching.  It’s priced too high for such an example. I would value that particular one just a little above a Wilson tube MP40. Yes, it’s a “C&R” but it’s an MP40 salad, of sorts…cobbled together from parts. I would try looking for a private deal…you have the potential to cut out the dealers and save good money.

Good luck in your search...just hope your search doesn't fall on a couple I'm currently looking at....lol.

Thank you for your responses and insight...I will definitely pass on that one!

Exactly the type of information I need to make an informed decision.

I ordered the book "Blitzkrieg: The MP40 Maschinenpistol of World War 2" and am expecting it today; hoping that will help expand my knowledge of the different variations, etc.

Thanks again,

Good move! You'll find it to be very helpful.

Update on the MP40 hunt. I had a Forum Member reach out to me re: a very nice MP40 he had for sale. We made a deal and e-Filed the Form 4 this morning.

Waiting for approval and will post pics when I have it safely back home.

Thanks to everyone for the information and encouragement here on this thread and in your PMs

There are plenty of C&R numbers matching guns out there. The Nederlander registry has quite a few, one of which is mine (BNZ 41, #1159). If you are collecting, spend the $ and get a matching gun. PM me your email, the registry is 19 pages long......

Congratulations Skip. Did you end up getting it for less money than the one offered on Chester County Armory?

Thank you and, yes, the one I bought clocked in at considerably less money than the Chester County gun and much less than the one I was following in Poulin's auction!

Pics coming once I have it safely back home.

If you bought the MP40 from NFA Sales, I examined that gun in person and can tell you it is a nice gun.

I checked the NFA Sales site repeatedly and didn’t see one listed. I e-mailed Ruben Mendiola to see if he might have on incoming, but didn’t hear back from him. The one I ended up getting is coming from a Class 3 Dealer and Forum Member here.

I‘ll share pics & more of the story once the ATF approves the transfer and I have  it back home.

Anything on Poulin's or Morphy's really shouldn't be used to bench marked prices on. Any private deal you aren't paying a 20+% premium or sales tax. I take it you got into yours for about $25k and it's a C&R!

Very close, I can tell you the one I bought was less than the Poulin‘s gun (Lot #1009) before the addition of the Buyer’s Premium, taxes, and shipping. It is indeed a C&R gun, so I can take possession directly from the seller/dealer once the transfer is approved
