TBird
I have three repro MP 44 mags. Taiwan ones work just fine. All my others are WWII + 1 East German.
TSMGguy
The Germans had a MP38/40 magazine reliability problem, and they knew it, especially in conditions of dirt, dust, and extreme cold. One solution was to recommend that the mags be loaded to no more than 28 rounds. The ribs were added in early 1942 not for strength, but to reduce the internal friction between the cartridges and the sides of the mags. Opinions vary as to whether the mod worked or not. For me, the best functional reliability is achieved with an excellent condition ribbed Steyr mag and 124 gr. 9mm NATO M882 ammo, or equivalent. The few slab-sided mags that I have are collector's items and don't go to the range.
