  • TSMGguy changed the title to CMP To Offer Surplus M14s

First time USGI M14's are available to purchase by the general public.
Purchase the nicest example that you can afford.
They don't make these anymore..

Really???  The CMP is going  to sell surplus MACHINEGUNS??

They're converted to semi-auto.  Some discussion on Sturmgewehr about how the legality may have been handled

The CMP must have received a special deal from the ATF.

In the past the only way to make a M14 legal was to torch the receiver in half and weld it back together.

It will be interesting to see how much the receivers must be modified to comply with ATF requirements,

The ATF approved a bunch of select fire Luxembourg contract FN-49s for importation that had been converted to semi-auto only. I have one. It can be done.

In the case of the M14, a little blob of weld on the selector mechanism will neatly accomplish the job. I imagine that whatever the ATF requires of CMP will be much more extensive, possibly effecting desirability. If the gun ends up looking and functioning like an Aussie single shot L1A1, it won't sell.

My understanding is the lug for the selector gets milled off.
I believe they will ship with a 10 round magazine.
Of course they will be graded and priced accordingly.

I'd think that with the selector milled off there would be no place to mount the connector. Without that, the rifle is free to disassemble itself.

With the amount of time and planning that has gone into this, I am sure The CMP has all the details worked out.
MG only parts will be gone, rifle will function fine.
The guns will be graded and sold to US collectors, much better than going overseas or being cut up!

So, once a Machine Gun, not always a Machine Gun?

If that’s changed, they need to work on M2 marked carbine receivers.

Theres many things they need to work on. Honestly, if they won't reevaluate M2 Carbine receivers on top of the many other guns the reclassfied as "machineguns" after the fact, they should do an amnesty. Everyone's been wanting one for decades anyway.

Wow this is wild, after the DOE 14's I moved years ago and the One TRW National Match gun that was in the law suit years ago I never expected this to happen.!

Thx

That is exactly what I was thinking. Does anyone know how the US converted the FA M14's to semi? Did they just remove the FA parts or cut off the lug?

They simply installed a little button that replaced the selector switch. Otherwise, the SA M14s were identical to the FA guns. Most M14s left their respective factories in the SA configuration.

My bet is that it is going to have to be something more extensive and isn’t easy to undo. If the price is right, I may grab one to make into a post sample.

That said, I know they are near impossible to control on FA.

From what I've read elsewhere they are cutting off the tab that mounts the selector switch, trimming the disconnector to the semi configuration and removing all the other relevant FA parts

Should be enough for almost everyone, but depends on how many were destroyed by Bill Clinton and how many were given away as foreign aid.

Still have my SA Inc M1A from 1982, all GI parts but the receiver so I believe I will pass on one of these from CMP.  I seriously doubt it will shoot any better than what I have.

Just the FA lug.

My question on this is how many will be bought up and then resold for twice the price at gun shows by the “private seller” crowd. I’m sure there will be a run on them soon as they are released. Love to have one, but I’m not holding my breath or paying more than what a brand new Springfield M1A costs.

I wish it was that simple!

None of those parts are required required for semi auto operation so can't they just be tossed and the FA mounting lug cut off.  Maybe trim the arm on the disconnector to match the SA configuration

We'll certainly see.
