I bought a SA M1A in 1985 and was fortunate to be shooting on base at Ft Benning one day when the Army Markmanship Unit was there.  There took my gun in and worked it for a few hours.  Talk about a sweet shooting gun!

The CMP was able to re-import many M1 Garands that were given away as military aid. One country I remember was Greece, with at least 2 lots, in the 2nd lot there were 102,000 M1s, which included some M1C and MID sniper versions. Story was in the Garand Collectors magazine summer 2008 issue.

The CMP seems to have some influence somewhere.   

In the 1980s a lot of M14 parts kits were brought in from Israel, selling as low as $239.00 with original barrels.  

During the 1990s when the democrats were cutting up surplus rifles, a guy was at Knob Creek selling BRAND new M14 Walnut buttstocks with butt-plates. He said they were from rifles that had been destroyed.

Depending on price I will be getting one and then I’ll probably sell my pre-ban M1A.

So I have a SA Factory Select Fire M14 and several FA parts kits (extras, just in case) and pulled the kits. They both came with the selector lock, which replaces the selector switch and spring and pins into place for semi-auto conversions. This is how the issued M14 (semi-auto only ) would have been issued i.e. without the selector switch and spring. For the CMP guns, that won't work as all one would have to do is remove the lock and install a spring and selector switch. Looking at the gun more carefully, the solution and what will most likely happen is that the FA parts lug will be milled off and all FA parts removed. without the lug which houses all the key FA parts, the gun is semi only.

When the original M1A's came out the government wouldn't even let SA call them M14's and now all of the sudden they are changing their "once a machine gun always a machine gun" rule. I have a 4 digit SA M1A National match with a bedded stock. I think I will pass on the CMP M14.

The (original gov't) Springfield Armory attempted to make M14s semi-auto-only in 1963 by welding the selector locks in place.

The (again the original gov't) Springfield Armory also made a small run of semi-auto-only receivers.
