Tom Hanks At It Again?

Recommended Posts

Was watching Tom Hanks on a talk show last night. He said he and Speilberg are making another WWII series for HBO, this time around the Pacific Theatre. Sounds like another top notch program is on the way. Should be some more Thompson action to enjoy. Anybody else heard anything about this? It was welcome news to me, being the WWII junkie that I am. Anybody know a release date?

Also, has anybody seen the WWII flick SAINTS AND SOLDIERS? It won a lot of awards overseas, but has had limited release here in the states, mainly around the mid west I hear. Wondering if it's any good?

Just found the following:

According to the trades, Hanks and his Playtone producing partner Gary Goetzman are reuniting with the Saving Private Ryan director to mount a new 10-part WWII miniseries, dubbed for now "Untitled World War II Pacific Theater Project," which is on the fast track at DreamWorks.

Like Band of Brothers, the new mini-series will channel the scope and spirit of that award-winning docudrama by focusing on a battalion of soldiers through America's island assault against the Japanese, which culminated in the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The story will also have a similar $100 million-plus budget, but unlike Brothers, which was based on famed historian Stephen Ambrose's bestselling book following the trials of Easy Company, the 506th Airborne regiment after landing in France on D-Day, the new project will be an original work.

Spielberg, Hanks, and Goetzman are reportedly eyeing scribe Bruce McKenna, who won a Writers Guild of America award for penning several episodes of Band of Brothers, to take charge of the writing team for the Pacific campaign.

not just do a "blast 'em all kill the Japs" movie.

Like 'Windtalkers'. The assault on Saipan, with those huge mountains http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif If you have ever seen Saipan and Tinian they are flat, like a prom queens belly! That what we wanted them for: stationary flat tops for B-29s!

Hard to explane to a movie audience why such fierce fighting was required to capture a featureless socer field like island!!

Here's what I know about it so far ... The movie will be based on E.B. Sledge's wonderful memoir "With the Old Breed at Peleiu and Okinawa". The word has been making the rounds in the Japanese collectors circles for a couple of years now. Talked with Sledge's son at the Banzai Shoot-Out in May, he and other vets who served with his dad have been interviewed and filmed for the intro pieces. I met a man at the MAX militaria show in Charlotte who is in charge of props. He says he has to outfit 500 US soldiers and 500 Japanese soldiers head to foot for the movie. He said that Speilberg and Hanks are the producers, Clint Eastwood is slated for Director. Shooting is scheduled to begin November 2005 and possible release late summer early fall 2006. Although it is based on Sledge's memoir, he said the movie would be strongly about Iwo Jima. My guess is so they can have a flag raising at the end. Anyway, that's what I know so far ... Hope this helps.

PS: Buy Japanese rifles while they are cheap -- I hope they will go through the roof like Mausers after "Saving Pvt. Ryan". R

Philadelphia was an excellent, well-acted movie. I don't approve of the lifestyle but there's already too much hate in the world without me adding to it.

Just cause a movie is well acted doesn't make the movie a excellent movie. The media has been ramming homosexuality down our throats(no pun intended) for the last few years. They are trying to "mainstream" the perverted and evil lifestyle of homosexuality. It's obviously succeding. When the day comes when Hollywierd pushes the incest "lifestyle" and makes a movie about a father marrying his daughter or mother/son or even sibling sex. Are we gonna say "I don't agree with the lifestyle but it was an excellent movie!"

I don't hate fags, I hate what they do.

I just hope they don't make a mess of it like Thin Red Line. Talk about hollywood taking a story and totaly running away with it. Miller got a little wierd but nothing like the movie writers. I went with my father in law, a pacific and Korea vet, and we were both totaly disgusted. I have very little good to say about Windtalkers too. In both cases they paid good attention to detail, weapons ect but the storys sucked, and thats what really counts.

Ironic that he's a flaming liberal http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wacko.gif

I don't think Tom Hanks is quite as liberal as most in hollywood although he certainly is liberal to some extent. He keeps alot of his political views to Himself. I admire him for his work with and for WWII veterans and that alone makes it tolerable for Me to watch his movies in spite of the fact I am certain We don't see eye to eye on many issues. Sylvester Stallone on the other hand is such a nutcase rabid hypocritical liberal a$$ that I will never watch another of his movies no matter how many guns he carries or how many bad guys he offs in his movies. Stallone is liberal slimeball of the first order. I will never forget his statement that the only way We are going to stop gun violence is to go door to door and search every house in America and destroy every gun found in possesion of the citizens! Zeig Heil! Stallone!
