Kammer (bolt handle) markings

Recommended Posts

I have seen AYF stamped on most of the bolt handles that i have seen (late "two piece" safety type) as the information that i have seen states that Erma made the majority of the late bolt handles but has anyone seen any other variant? Also, what stamps (if any) are present on the earlier "hook" style?

Hi, Mark,!

Talk about some limited experience, I've only seen two bolt handles, both of the sliding/locking type. One is on my '41 BNZ gun. The end of the sliding portion has a 37 waffenamt stamp. This is the only part of the gun which does not have a 623 stamp (Steyr, Austria). I believe the bolt of the gun was field modified from the first type bolt handle. The bolt serial matches those of the rest of the gun, and the inside of the bolt where the bolt handle is installed shows evidence of having been re-machined.

My other bolt is completely unmarked; no serial, no waffenampt markings. The sliding portion of the bolt handle is marked ayf.

Cool! A mp40 that never runs out of ammo!

Hi TSMGuy, thank you for the information, i was hoping that someone would reply on this topic. i was also hoping to find out some info on the earlier hook style bolt handle. ya, you like the avatar? thats me with my Marushin mp40. that's interesting that your other bolt has no markings on it is it possibly post-war?

Hey, Mark! Yes, very cool avatar indeed! I believe the bolt to be early wartime due to the ayf stamp on the sliding portion of the bolt handle. I'll dig the thing out of the safe and get back to you; it might have a waffenampt stamping that I missed. Might it have been produced as a spare part, as it is not serialed? I don't know. I picked it up as a spare for my guns, but you'll never have trouble with a bolt; it's the firing pins that break and the extractors that tend to give trouble. It's too small to plant petunias in, too!

Hi TSMGguy, yes there is a distinct possibility that it was a repair part that came out of a Whermacht armorers spare parts box. I seriously doubt that you will have any problems with any of your bolts unless the sear notch is worn badly! i wish that i could have any real mp40 parts (just to look at!) but this state forbids that!

nope, not even parts sets. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/mad.gif Washington state is pretty firm on this subject unfortunately, so i stay away from any full-auto parts! I would like to take a moment to thank Washington state for saving me from all of the nasty machine guns and parts! i feel so much safer! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif thank you.
