chopper21
This may have been covered to death in earlier postings, as the guy in question has offered this sort of thing before, but does anyone out there know anything about the object being offered this week as eBay #2202468498: "Hudson: Thompson M1A1 Submachine Gun". It's described as being a "plug fire cartridge blowback, comes with 32 cartridges "of the Hudson latest piston type." Sounds like this thing fires a projectile of some sort, although the seller also says that it "cannot fire any type of projectile or ammunition and will be shipped with a blaze orange plug as per eBay rules and Federal Law." Right... and since it's coming from Denmark, the delivery agent at your door could be an ATF man with handcuffs on his belt... or not. What's the scoop on this piece? It looks to be a pretty nice in the rather lousy photos the guy is posting.
LIONHART
TOY GUN. Who in their right mind would spend $600.00++ on a cap gun?
Roland, Headless Thompson Gunner
THere has been a lot of discussions of the Hudson and MGC Blowback PFC Model/Toy guns. Check out the old board listing for those. They do not fire any projectiles, they just basically chamber a round from the mag which sets off a cap within the cartridge. The firing PIN is in the barrel. You then have to reload the cartridge with a new cap. But they do fire in full auto mode. Dont make too much noise though. They are very realistic in weight and detail and you can use real Thompson parts such as grips and stocks. But unless you are into reloading they are more for show than anything. Cartridges are getting harder to find.
Incomplete
Do they have any recoil at all to them?
Ron A
Its a "toy cap gun" - as much recoil as any childs cap gun. NONE. The noise is that of a small cap gun, almost none. There are several offered on Ebay most of the time. The correct caps are almost impossible to find, however if your state allows fireworks at the 4th you can stuff several standard paper caps that can be purchased, one over the other and it may fire and eject the spent round. Roland, Headless Thompson Gunner
Come on Ron, You're being a little harsh. For us shooter wannabes who parade around the house with our display models, the Hudson and MGC "toys" are as close as we can get. Yes, I wished they made some more noise (maybe I'll stuff a few more caps in there next 4th ) and Yes, I wished they would climb the stairs, but whenvver I empty the drum in the kitchen my wife complains about the smell all day... And you can find the caps, but I dare not say where.
chopper21
Thanks for the info, everyone. No, I wouldn't pay $600 for a toy - either this or the MGC type. The seller's reserve hasn't been reached yet, so I didn't know he has such high expectations. I was just curious about an item I'm unfamiliar with.. Ron A
I didn't mean to be harsh - what I stated is true, one can't expect the gun to recoil and make noise. I know because I purchased one many years ago with that expection. I use mine to fill an hard case when I display my 28. I am sure the correct caps can be located, however 4 paper caps work almost as well. The gun will function and the shell ejects. But $600.00? LIONHART
Aren't these Cap Guns produced from Zinc?
Arthur Fliegenheimer
Yes. And if you wear this toy gun to the beach it can protect you from the harmful effects of UV and ultraviolet rays.
Ron A
Zinc. yes - but Arthur, ultraviolet rays?
Ben
If you took one to the beach I think ultraviolet rays would be the least of your worries...the ten armed to the teeth swat police shouting at you to put your hands in the air would be slightly more troublesome... Anyway, i just wanted to defend these MGC replicas. I'm from the UK and we've only got two choices when it comes to owning a Thompson. we can either get a real one that will have had most of the working parts welded together because of the UK gun laws(dewat i think they're called in the US)..or we can buy one of these replicas. I own a real dewat M1A1 and and two MGC's. The MGC is twice the fun of the real thing because you can strip it down, load the mag up and fire it. Ok, it can in no way be compared to firing a real one (I'd imagine) but you do get a bit of recoil, smoke and "spent" shells flying out. Yes, its party made of zinc but it looks and weighs about the same as the real thing. Untill someone can manufacture and supply a proper blank firing Thompson then the MGC's are as good as it gets for us "disadvantaged" people. Also, you don't need any kind of license, police check or a lottery win to buy one. I think that some of the lucky ones on this board who are allowed to own and fire your real Thompsons can be a bit snobbish and condescending sometimes. We're not all as fortunate as you but our interest in the Thompson is just as strong... Right, now I've got that off my chest (apologies everyone) I think I'll loose off a full mag of "cap gun" rounds at the cat..she thinks its real enough!! LIONHART
There is a Full Auto Rubber Band Gun being advertised in Shotgun News. Perhaps a THOMPSON version will be introduced soon.
Arthur Fliegenheimer
I was going for a zinc oxide joke. You know the stuff you wear on your nose to keep from burning. I know this board is Thompson all incompasing, even if some items have only a nodding acquaintance with the SMG. I do fondly remember the Thompson water gun from the 1960's. Roland, Headless Thompson Gunner
I'm with you Ben, as a shooter wannabe I enjoy 'playing' with my MGC and Hudson. And when I show my friends my 28A1, M1, and M1A1 display guns they all want to play with the toys as well. Maybe if we could get the "fortunate sons" on this site who constantly remind us how overpriced TSMGs are now to unload their vaults and flood the auction sites with cheap Thompsons we could hang up our trusty cap guns. And hey Phil, go a little easy on that silver tonqued PM, we dont have too many guys on our side these days. (not that we need them).
mp40
Man, I just love these "lively" disscussions! I personally love my MGC made "Thompson" and i would love to own a Hudson M1A1...But i truly desire a real-Thompson- (and a mp40, mac11,S&W M76,and.....)but just not in this state.....Verboten! So sadly, I must make do....
Arthur Fliegenheimer
Roland, If the vintage MGC MP-40's and TSMG are selling for $500 to $900 today, when they originally sold for $75 back in the early 1970's, then the real McCoy TSMGs' are priced right where they should be at 8 to 12 times their early 1970's price tag. In this perfect world De Beers would surrender their monopoly on South African diamonds and a 5 carat rock would then fetch a few thousand. Arthur Fliegenheimer
Phil, I bought a mail order MGC MP-40 back in 1971 for $70. The same year, J. Curtis Earl was selling 1921/28Colt TSMG's for $1000. Now, he was on the high side, but for most people he was the only game in town as far as available Class III dealers back then. I am not so sure about the demand, growing or otherwise, for Class III weapons. There are an abundance of them up for sale at all times. Some languish on the sale boards for extremely long periods. This may be in part to exalted prices, but I am not sure what the desire would be for exceedingly cheap and abundant Class III items when they never sold like hot cakes before any federal NRA laws. Consider Auto-Ord only sold about 5,000 of their Colt 1921/28's before the 1934 law. Tony Blair was, and is, the only foreign leader who has stood by Bush 43 concerning the Iraq war, thus enduring tremendous damage to his political capital in Great Britian.
