Ao Steel Vs Aluminum M1 Semi

Recommended Posts

While I know the Kahr / AO Thompson Semis don't get a lot of love on these boards I'm looking for some advice none the less. I've got a time constrained purchase to make in the next few months and really have narrowed it down to either the Thompson TM1 or TM1-C (Semi ver of the m1). I'm not looking for a collector or anything like that. Just want an "M1 like Thompson" to take along with my Garand, Carbine and 1911 for WW2 day at the range. The aluminum receiver model saves me at least $200 over the steel but I'm wondering what the durability of the lightweight one might be like. Is it worth the extra $ to go steel?

Thanks

I would go with steel.

Its more durable and and the light weight receiver scratches VERY easily (as aluminum does.)

My $.02 worth...

Hello,

I had a W.H. semi in aluminum and put lots of ammo down range. I never had any problems with the softer receiver. As far as me ever buying another semi in aluminum I would. I like the 2lbs less weight. I now have a semi 28a1 and it is heavy yet still fun to shoot.

Have fun and good luck.

I had the aluminum receiver Kahr and had nothing but problems with it. After 3 trips back and forth for servicing they finally gave up and sent me a steel receiver one, not a single problem since. Just my .02, hope it helps.

Is it possible to replace the aluminum frame for a steel frame using the parts? Accidentally purchased the lightweight version and wanted the steel version. Looking for ways around buying a new gun or trying to return the gun back to the store since it was an online order. Thanks!
