heavy artillery
I have a select-fire M-14 (Springfield, Devine, TX – personally owned). I have enjoyed using the M14ALCS chop-mod stock with a Springfield SOCOM that I own and wanted to migrate this rifle to this stock system as well. I procured the M14ALCS chop-mod variant with adjustable cheek rest. I am looking for assistance with a functional issue. This rifle functions perfectly in it’s current standard USGI stock and is in a scout/squad configuration. After installing the EBR stock assembly, I did some function checking. When I pull the bolt back the hammer will catch in either semi or auto. When I pull the bolt back with the trigger depressed, the hammer is not catching in either semi or auto. It appears that there is a slight fit/tolerance issue that is keeping the hammer from catching while in semi. I have noticed a slight gap on the back of the receiver (the front of the receiver sits nicely on top of the EBR lower, the back of the receiver has a slight gap). I believe this gap is just enough that the hammer isn’t catching when in semi. I have tried this receiver in two different EBR chassis units, with the same issue. This chop-mod EBR stock has the proper gap to accommodate the selector shaft assembly. It is an earlier style, based on the type of recoil pad. The other EBR stock I tried is a newer style, with the newer type of recoil pad. My initial thought is to file down where the front of the receiver sets until the gap is eliminated. At that point, the tolerance may be enough that the hammer catches properly. Before doing that, I'd like to run it by some of the experts out there. I would appreciate any feedback/assistance you'd be willing to share based on your experiences. Thanks! Additional info: I also tried a second brand new trigger group assembly to ensure there was not a worn part in the trigger group causing the issue. heavy artillery
Update: Problem Resolved FYI for anyone who experiences a similar issue. The issue was with the alignment of the trigger group and the upper assembly. I filed down the inside rear of the trigger group contact area until the problem was resolved. I didn't have to take off too much material. The lockup is still nice and tight. I understand that this can be a problem when bedding this area as well.
