  1. yep i have a M16a2 govt marked.....there have been 14 that have come up this year.....one is mine....its minty, but questionable if truely unused.....my guess is someone shot a few mags through it....

mine is the lowest serial # of all of them ive seen 6,0xx,xxx while most are 6,2xx,xxxx-6,3xx,xxx....not sure if that makes it an earlier one or not.....

next time i go to my gun shop im grabbing my upper.....i want to verify the barrel doesnt have a date code......color is questionable...its not light grey, not black.....but i was told because its in grease still that the color will lighten..........

there have been 100+ A2's and NIB A1's in the past 2 years......they are all questionable...i believe mine to be real since its my most expensive gun.....but its questionable right now

there are M4's right now for sale....guns that could have not existed in 1986...so most likely they were damaged M16's and old serial #'s rolled onto modern guns for a replacement....if 10% of that collection are fakes/remakes it puts the whole collection in question...not sure what a FOIA will show me....i guess i was hoping it would give details of at least a police dept or prison....i understand wanting to keep an individual off the record, but dont see why they would protect a prison

Yea, I've always wondered about those transferable M16-A2's with A3 receiver re-enforcements.

A feature which did not appear until the early 2000's.

  3. May be a bit off topic, but dang that's pretty furniture on the '28! Did you finish it yourself, or Dan Block, or?

And oh the case is nice too. My local PD had one when I was a kid, with a mint Overstamp inside.

    Cheers,

    Ron

The vertical grip is an IMA repro - came with a horizontal.

The rest is what came with the gun - i't not in real bad shape, but probably could use a refinish job.

    It's a NAC 1928-A1.

    Another photo ........

  4. We could be looking at a case of a WW2 veteran who carried a trenchgun in battle having a copy made post war . Then the " I carried a gun just like this " became " This is what I carried " which was interpeted as " this is the one I carried " .

    Chris

I believe you probably hit the nail on the head,

The non-military rear sling-swivel would also make sense in this case.

I guess we have a riot that was converted to a trench at sometime in it's life.

Would the riots have a non-military sling swivel?

How rare are the 1930's riot guns?

    Thanks again.

  5. The handguard seems to fit real well on this one.

Also, I see that the rear sling-swivel is not right.

I checked with my local gunsmith and he has a few of the military ones, so replacing it will be no problem - he has done it before and knows how to do it properly.

If I can get this for a reasonable price, i"m going for it.

Win '87's seem to be scarce and perhaps I could get a proper handguard down the road.

I suppose the gun without the handguard would be considered a "riot gun", is this correct?

Heck, I may even throw some more money at it and get a Cody/Winchester letter for it.

Thanks for all of your help.

  6. Yea, due to the S/N I was pretty sure it wasn't an original trench gun - thanks for verifying it for me.

What would you say the quality of it as a fake/reproduction?

Gun is a real Winchester 1897 and the S/N puts it at about 1938 manufacture and is said to function well.

Seems to have all the right parts in the right places, just lacks the proper marking, etc ....

The real catcher is the handguard. Is the handguard after-market? If so, can you give insight to the manufacturer, etc?

Also, handguard seems to fit well with no shims, etc. Would the barrel on a normal 20" 1938 '87 allow for this?

Could the handguard be an un-marked Winchester?

    Thanks again.

  7. More information and lots of photos:

    - What is the choke marking on the barrel? CYL

    - Is the barrel info readable or is some hid by the handguard? some hidden

    - Does the magazine cap have a stud which goes into a hole on the rear of the adapter? does the handguard have to be removed to see this?

    - Markings on adapter? does the handguard have to be removed to see this?

    - Front sight bead on barrel? no, it's on the handguard

    - Barrel taper fit handguard or is there a gap/bushing at the front? tapered/no bushings
