  1. Transfer Time For Form 4s

    I just had two transfers come through over the last month. A 1919A4 took five weeks, and a MAC-11 .380 took 4 weeks, three days. Looks like the move to W. Virginia was a good thing for the NFA.

     

    How 'bout the rest of you? How long are your current transfers taking.

     

    BTW: Thompson Greed isn't an isolated happening. I paid $17.5k for my 1919A4 and $2700 for the mini-Mac. Both prices are 20% higher than six months ago. When my 1919A4 hit the Class III shop, a guy standing there offered me $19k before I even took possession.

    Oh, I don't know, Ron. I just managed to sell my 1919A4 w/goodies for $19,500 Yesterday. It took one five-minute phone call. The deposit is in my bank and the balance will be there Tuesday. The market here in Nevada is red-hot. You have any C3 stuff you want sold? My dealer is looking, and I'm buying. Just bought a MAC-11 .380 (Mini-MAC) for $2500 last month and turned down $3000 last week.

    Like I say, got anything for sale?

    Much has been said about Mr. Cox's book, it's value, and possibility of reprint. I've never seen a copy, but I understand it's quite valuable. I own a publishiung house (small) and am an author of 10 books. I'm quite familiar with the publishing busines and have a comment, or two about a reprint.

     

    1. Unless the book had quite a high cover price, sales would have to be at least 1,000 to pay printing, ISBN fees, USA book rights, shipping, etc. I understand that Sarco had the rights at one time - do they still?

     

    2. My last effort ws "The Complete Guide to Cessna Aircraft" 2nd edition (Amazon.com; B&N and others). I printed 2500 copies a few years ago. Any one want to buy a few hundred? $19.95 ... I've got lots left.

     

    3. Nitch, specialty, or 'boy's books" publishing is a VERY time-consuming proceedure. For instance ... where would the publisher get all the photos for the book. Just copying the ones in the original will not work. A copy of a copy prints poorly. There's a moire effect that comes from scanning a photo in a book. In other words, it wouldn't come out well at all.

     

    4. Photos probably could be acquired by hitting up all the TCA, MG.com and private owners, but using old photos would require getting written permission from the owners.

     

    5. Figure 8 months to a year for publication.. Look at how many problems Mike has with a calendar. And thats only 12-15 photos and 20-35 pages. I estimate 150-200 photos for a book, both black and white and 150-200 pages.

     

    6. The BIG ONE - who will advance the $6500 to $8000 to do the book?

     

    7. At $100 per book, 65-80 would have to sell just to pay costs.

    Would 80 of you put up that kind of money?

    or

    160 @ $50

    320 @$25

    And this is just cost. I like to think a profit can be made in publishing - especially after 8 mos. of work, so double all the figures. That would return $8k in net sales, or $1k per month.

    Bottom line, just how bad do we want/need a book?

    I'm more than open to discussion, be it here or e-mail.

    Well, I went to see the Ape yesterday. Ok film, ok acting, great CGI, wondeful shots of Thompsons. I particularly enjoyed the scene where the kid shot the giant bugs off an actor by using a Thompson. In the scene he sprayed and prayed, oh, probably 50 rounds out of a waving barrel and never so much as put a crease in the actor - damn good shot I say.

  9. Kabc Los Angels Airs Mg Shoot In Nevada

    This shoot is put on by Mustang Range. They do it twice a year, along with teaching MG operations. I was there when the reporter was doing her thing. We talked very briefly and she said she was having a ball. She shot all kinds of weapons and enjoyed them a bunch. I'm totally surprised that LA TV gave it such a positive slant.

    I've located a NIB WH M1 with a 25xxxA s/n (1984-5 build date? It's a C&R.) I think the guy wants to get $17k for it. I can't afford it, but I thought I'd run it past everybody to see what you think. From what I know, It's on a Form 3 and the buyer-to-be just died. His son - cop in California - wants it gone. I'm fairly sure that if someone here wanted it, I could tie it up w/o any cash for long enough to make a deal. Being NIB, it will probably need some work to make it run, maybe not - mine did.     Man, that is one nice weapon! I've seen them advertized, but know absolutely nothing about them,

     

    Would I be prying if I asked just how much money do they (whoever "they" are) ask for the gun and kit? Did it come through Ed at Urban Armory?

    The man's name at the ATF is James Scott Robinson, and he's one of the good guys. He cleared up four transfers I've had pending dealer-to-dealer since May 16. His phone number at his desk (guard with your life) is 304-260-1107 in W. Virginia. He was most helpeful to me and is very easy to talk to.

     

    I have 2 more transfers coming through, then will sell my collection of five Class III guns and buy a Colt Tommy.

     

    If you are interested in some less-expensive Class III guns, let me know.

     

    Colt SP-1 - $11.5k

     

    Mac - 10 NIB - $3,400

     

    M2 Carbine (pack gun, not C&R) - $4,900

     

    MK 760 NIB (with hang tag) - $4,600

    Frank, I've got a NIB MK 760 on its way that you could use for photos if needed. I'm a writer and photog and have the facilities to take pro shots. I also have a magazine named Guns and Ammo's Complete guide to Full Auto firearms with a 3-page story on the MK 760 by Joe Poyer. I can send you a copy if you want. I also might have other info around the house, I' ll check.

     

    And I do want a signed copy of the book when it comes out.

    I saw that shirt when it was sold by Butterfield's a few years ago. Along with it was a 1911 Clyde had stolen from an armory and other B&C artifacts. I interviewed Marie Barrow for a story in GUNS magazine at that auction. She said her older brother was good to her and always made sure she had some money. The shirt is real - dried blood and all. I think it sold in the $16k range, but could be wrong.

    One thing about Ciener you guys probably don't know. He's had to have made a great deal of money from these kits because he owns a couple of Ferrari Formula One cars, replete with full time Italian mechanics to keep the cars happy. These are VERY expensive play toys and he runs them in vintage races which probably takes $20k+ per event if nothing breaks. Tire warmers are $1,000 per set of four, 117 octane fuel is $8.00/gal. and those little V-12 engines drink a lot. The Motronic on-board electronics are in excess of $15k. Two-way radio is $5k.

     

    And you thought Tommy is expensive! Ha!

    Just out of idle curiosity, I wonder how hard it would be to find out who is Kahr's supplier of drums. If we had that info, we could go direct and possibly get exactly what we want.

     

    I imagine it would take an order of 50-100 drums to get the supplier interested, but it would be worth it to avoid dealing with Kahr.

    Walter "Karamojo" Bell used a number of rifles on elephant, but his favorite was a .275 Rigby - the old 7x57 Mauser - firing a 173-gr. steel jacketed solid bullet at a modest 2300 fps. With it, he shot a great many of his 1000-plus elephants.
