Beginner
Hi Posted this thread in the TSMG-section but got no replies so I wanted to try here. Short story: very nice Savage M1 has these markings. The BVS (?) is under the barrel just rear of muzzle, the "80" and stamp is in front of magazine well. Can anyone identify the stamps; are they proof marks/capture marks etc? Thanks
Tman
The mark in the second pic is a Czech proof mark for smokeless powder. This mark has been in use by the Prague proof house since 1931. The number '80' may be the proof number listed in the records of the proof house. The first pic may have the same Prague proof mark but its not too clear. Couldn't find anything on the BVS mark. All info was gathered from The Standard Directory of Proof Marks by Wirnsberger and The Official Guide to Gunmarks, 3rd ed. by Balderson
Beginner
Thank you, Tman! That is the stamp, no question about it. Am I wrong to assume the gun was refinished after the stamps were applied, based on the fact the stamps have finish in them vs "broken" original finish.?
