One of my regular range rifles include this Winchester M14.

It's an early one, December 1960 under barrel.

Local range max distance is 500 yrds, although the open sights keeps accurate to 300 yrds (for me).

Converted to semi auto.

Great stock and a pleasing heavy rifle to hold & shoot.

When I locate a Springfield scope mount I'll should tighten the groups.

Best

Beautiful! Here's the early slotted handguard you need for that Winchester:

That porting must help with barrel heat dissipation - good to see - thanks

Nevertheless, the slotted fiberglass handguard is the correct one for any early M14.

The slotted handguard was replaced with solid because it was not GI or Marine proof, and tended to break with abuse. The slotted handguard in turn replaced the early wooden ones, which tended to char. Here's about the only place to obtain an original new or nearly slotted handguard:

Jersey,

The slotted handguard was eventually rejected by the US Army.

While it did provide for ventilation , it also resulted in heatwaves that made sighting difficult.

I'll check this out - thanks.

Remaining with Range Rifles in 7.62N, here's another I rotate within my favourites.

FN FAL G1 issued to the German Border Guard. Hope there's some shared interest on the forum.

I get some really good groups up to 300 yrds, the gas system can get gummed up so I give it a good strip & clean after each use. It's history holds as a former German Border Guard rifle & it comes with matching mag pouches & a couple 20rd mags. Would need a sling to complete. It's full number's matching including the receiver, bolt, bolt carrier & flash hider although it sports an inch L1A1 selector to maintain semi auto fire.

Got 150 rounds of .308 Win as part of a deal today - any thoughts on using the .308 in a FAL? Gas setting etc...?
