m1a1bert
Hello, I am the new owner to a German Maxim C&R 08-15. Just bought a nice german lock how do I tell if this lock will function in my Maxim? What are the steps to check? Any help would be appreciated!f Thanks
Black River Militaria CII
Google up MG08/15 and look at you-tube videos. You have a lot to learn so use the internet and find a copy of Dolf Goldsmith's " The Devil's Paintbrush" on the German Maxims or other books as well. The standard German lock is common to both the MG08 and the MG08/15 so no problem there. waterdawg2004
I google headspace but do not find anything. I know headspace can not be adjusted on the German locks but will a headspace gauge from brownwells or midway tell me anything? On the vickers I added spaces until it would not lock up on a headspace gauge then took some out until it did lock up. The procedure in the vickers book was just to subjective for me, it seemed to rely on feel, which does not work if you have never "felt" how a correct headspace feels like. Thanks bubba for your posts always good info.

MG08
I would have to agree - I have yet to run into a lock that did not work in any of the German guns. Weak firing pin springs are a different problem. Dolf used to do a coil spring conversion, but I only have one of my locks fixed that way. I wish some one would start doing those in a cost effective manner......

There is a reason despite the demand no one is offering them. They were truly made at a time when labor was cheap because I cant find a way to use modern technology to make them any better. Yup - that is the way with a lot of the German Maxim parts - truly skilled craftsmen making the parts for a very complicated machine.
