mnshooter
Were the WH "true military" M1's (TUTB p.478) shipped with original GI M1 bolts? I saw a used one at a show that appeared to have an M1A1 bolt; possibly a replacement?
darrylta
My WH M1 came with a floating firing pin bolt, I've since changed everything over to M1A1 style hardware to match the hooded site and cross bolted stock. -Darryl
TSMGguy
I went the other way, making my WH M1 "true military", with all GI M1 parts from a matching parts kit, including milled grip mount and swivels, paddle style pivot and safety, "L" rear sight, no crossbolt stock, M1928A1 magazine latch, and "bright" bolt. The blued finish replicates the original. Photos below. Please forgive if you've seen them before. It had mostly GI internals with a few reproduction cast items. The original bolt was a close copy of the M1A1 bolt, but was not GI, and was too long. PK (who did the work in the photos below) recommended replacing this with GI, even if other WH parts are retained. In went a new condition original M1 "bright" bolt, the kind with the separate hammer, pin, spring, and firing pin. PK brought the gun into spec and completed the milling operations omitted by WH. http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/ind...post&id=381 http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/ind...post&id=383 http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/ind...post&id=382 http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/ind...post&id=379 http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/ind...post&id=384 There's been much debate on these boards as to whether or not the M1 bolt is inherently safer than the M1A1 bolt since the M1 bolt's firing pin firing pin is retracted until the bolt is very nearly in battery. Since no one seems to be having problems with premature ignition with TSMGs equipped with M1A1 bolts, I'd say that the question is largely moot. darrylta
PK does great work, I went the M1A1 route since I have a very early 4 digit Bridgeport M1 in blu. What a stout gun. -Darryl I went the other way, making my WH M1 "true military", with all GI M1 parts from a matching parts kit, including milled grip mount and swivels, paddle style pivot and safety, "L" rear sight, no crossbolt stock, M1928A1 magazine latch, and "bright" bolt. mnshooter
Beautiful job. Has there ever been a post asking if anyone has credible evidence of an M1A1 firing out of battery, and what, if any, was the damage?

RoscoeTurner
Oh, here we go again! Nah, we have a search feature for folks to find topics that have been beaten to death. Matter of fact I used that search feature and found five pages of posts regarding that subject none of which dealt with original production Thompsons, all that did mention out of battery mishaps were either WH, Kahr or Thompsons using other than original parts such as shorten springs, caliber conversions, poorly reloaded ammunition and the like. The original poster's question regarding what bolts were shipped by WH has been answered.
