Changing A Bm62 To Bm59 Trim

I recently Picked up a Berben imports BM62.

It's a shooter and I happened to have a spare new BM59 stock and hardware.

My first question is, is the Garand rear handguard a direct swap for the BM59. The one that is on this BM62 is to finely sanded and the wrong color to go with a GI buttstock.

Here is the current HG and potential stock. ( how do those BM59 front bands come off?)

Second is the gas cyl. I have a bipod and a NOS BM59 gas cyl as well as some spindle valve parts. Though I'm not sure I have all the right parts with it. Is there more than one type of spindle valve?

This is the gas cyl and the stuff that came with it. The Valve is clearly for use with a grenade launcher which I will not be adding. The nut for the other side seems OK but the pin and Spring clip don't seem to belong.

If any can share pics of their front ends it will help.

John ,

1st question is yes, they are the same and are a direct swap.

2nd question yes there are 2 types that I have seen.

The clip and spring do belong, but you are missing the flip up direct grenade launcher site.

Hop this helps,I will send you a brief pic of one of mine that I have saved .

Mike thanks for the pics you sent.

I think what I may be looking for is a Gas cyl spindle valve set up with NO grenade launching capability.

Oh yeah and how does that front band come off?

John I sent you an email about the spindle valve. The clip on the lower band can be difficult, I use a small flat screw driver and lift up from the top and it expands and comes off .the clip fits into a groove cut on the barrel.

This little clip can be a real pain sometimes .

John, you really do need a grenade sight frame with a gas cylinder cut for a spindle valve.

The spindle valve, nut, flat spring & roll pin do not index the spindle valve - the sight frame does that. Without a sight frame, the spindle valve will freely rotate, and may or may not line up with gas channel in the gas cylinder.

The "X" or "Plus" machined into the right side of the gas cylinder are the "stops" that aline or close off the gas path. The sight frame has a square hole on the left, to engage the square part of the spindle valve shaft. The right side of the sight frame has indentations that engage the machined out area on the right side of the gas cylinder.

A spindle valve with the small head will not take the long range grenade sight, but it still requires the grenade sight frame to index properly.

That pin you show in the pics looks to be a solid pin vice a roll pin. A roll pin is needed because nothing holds the pin into the spindle valve shaft except the tension of the roll pin trying to expand. The retaining nut on the end of spindle valve is stopped from backing off by the roll pin, but is not pinned in place by the roll pin.

1st pic shows 3 head on views of a complete gas cylinder assy w/grenade sight frame. The 3 views from L to R show;

1. Gas Cylinder w/grenade sight frame folded down

2. GC w/sight frame 90% rotated up - the indentation on the sight frame is almost to the machined area on the GC.

3. GC w/sight frame fully up. Note how the indentation in the sight frame has seated into the GC.

2nd pic from L to R

1. Bottom view of GC with good look at the roll pin - note how it does not touch the spindle valve nut.

2. Ride side view of the indentations pressed into the sight frame to index the spindle valve in GC.

3. Left side of a stripped grenade sight frame w/good view of the square hole to "catch" the spindle valve.

The Beretta BM59 Mark I - IV had no provision for greade launching & used a Gas Cylinder that did not have a spindle valve. This is GC that was later used on the BM69 & BM62.

Hope this helps.

Thanks fot the great pics and explanation.

I think I get it. The Nigerian, the BM62 and the BM69 have the gas cylinder without a spindle valve and grenade launcher site. Though two of them have been machined for Bipod use. That is where I was wanting to go.

I wanted to set up with the 4 inch brake with bayo lug no indirect ENERGA grenade sight and have a the ability to use the bipod.

I see now that what I really want is a Nigerian or BM69 gas cyl. I also now understand that the sheet metal of the ENERGA sight provides critical spacing in the assembly of the spindle valve. If I want the the bipod that bad it might be easier for me to just get indirect ENERGA grenade sight and just put it on even though the brake will not have a launcher.

All my italian contacts are out right now. Does anyone have a grenade sight for sale?

Thanks again.

When installing the spindle valve be very careful not to tighten the nut too tight. Tightening the nut excessively will cause the spindle valve to separate (pull apart) at the gas port in the valve. This is what started me making gas valves for people.

Do you also make the little spindle valve nuts ?

Yes I can.
