mike in pa
As requested a month or two back, here are the pics of my homemade SBR using the original barrel. I would have bought a factory SBR but I refused to pay $600 extra for a factory unit plus the wait is long before it's sent to the dealer. First I removed the barrel using the receiver holding fixture and barrel clamp that I made earlier this spring. I was able to remove the barrel with out leaving a mark on either the barrel or receiver. The vertical mill that I used was quite old and was manually operated. I used lead shims between the barrel and the barrel clamp. I cut the original barrel down, turned it on the lathe until 10.5" then I used a crowning bit from Brownells to crown the barrel. I turned the end of the barrel just enough to remove the taper so I could make a bushing for the front sight ring. I bored out a piece of steel barstock so it was a very snug fit onto the end of the barrel. I placed a small amount of epoxy into the barstock, and placed it onto the barrel. I held the barrel vertical, chamber end down and smacked the barrel down on a piece of carpet in my basement, which pile drived the barstock down to the lip. Then I turned the barstock bushing down for a very snug fit with the ring sight. I reinstalled the barrel, aligned up the ring sight, marked the bushing for the roll pin and I used a dremel with a cutting disc to make the roll pin groove. The only thing left is to touch up the finish on the muzzle end of the barrel Sorry that I forgot to take pics when working on the barrel, I forgot to bring the camera to the shop! The little thingy in the pic is an extended bolt knob that I made from aluminum. http://i36.tinypic.com/5o9yqo.jpg http://i33.tinypic.com/jue9sp.jpg http://i35.tinypic.com/30rp942.jpg Edited October 11, 2009 by mike in pa

james m
Good show. BTW: It's amazing how much better these look with a correct length barrel. I'm thinking of doing the same to my Thompson 27 semi-auto as well. Jim
